Is Sumlin getting a fair shake if he wins the next 2 with Starkel and we fire him?

After watching Miss State and Auburn it is clear that they are not the bad teams we thought they were. Sumlins starting red shirt QB Starkel goes down with a broken ankle bone in game 1. After that everyone we play knows that we have a true fish QB that is 99% more likely to hand off the ball or run with it himself before completing a pass.

If Sumlin beats Ole Miss and LSU, both on the road, with his qb that he wanted starting this season......I say give him one more year

No I’m gonna duck and run for cover

Nope.

You don’t judge him off one game (a cupcake game at that) or even one season. It’s about a body of work and through his almost 6 years here after the next two games, we’ve seen enough.

Mond has looked terrible except for a few stretches within individual games. As soon as Starkel was healthy he should have resumed as the starter. When it really counted Sumlin inexplicably stayed with Mond. Mond was god awful vs Gators in first half and okay in second half. We kicked 3 FGs in 4th to beat a shitty Gator team.

Vs MSU 56 total passing yards. Starkel comes in late and the offense starts moving the.ball.

Vs Auburn he starts Mond and he throws 20+ Times for 16 yards. How is this even possible?

On top of this our WR have looked absolutely horrible since the UCLA game. Last night it looked like a different receiving corp. Starkel got rid of the ball and this really helped the line vs Mond holding holding onto it forever and taking sacks.

Yes, it was New Mexico. Still, the offense moved with purpose. Deep threat was back. Crossing routes on target. Ball went to different receivers because Starkel has the ability to go to 2nd and 3rd option. Throws were low and didn’t sail. Last night was a glimpse of what might have been or could have been. We wasted a decent defense this year and this is Sumlin’s fault. He needs to go.

We are getting two arse kickings to finish the year, only reason any of this is in question is because we caught Florida at the worst they've been in years and USCe early. I think (hope) OM puts up 50+ so LSU doesn't get the chance to shite the bed like we did a couple years back and we get stuck with a lame duck coach for another year, moral victories don't count in year 6. Let's not forget why our QB situation is what it is.

We won't beat LSU so it won't matter but no. It's not about what ifs. However, it would make a good excuse to keep him if we can't get the buyout money together or lock down a deserving replacement.

Having said that, I'm excited to see what the new coach can do with Starkle,

You flip flop worse than a politician. One blowout vs New Mexico changes nothing. Sumlin is done. Wish him well. Move on to the next regime. Starkel will be there for Jimbo/Morris/Frost/Durkin too.

Too small of a window you’re looking through.

Hill
Murray
And the other kid that transferred.

Sumlin is a horrible manager of talent and must promise the moon to everyone.

Since Johnny, Sumlin is 0-7 against Alabama and LSU, and 1-6 against Mississippi State and Ole Miss. We're almost certainly going to run the first to 0-8 and have a 50/50 chance to run the second to 1-7. Very few of those losses were by less than 10 points, and a fair number were by 20+. That is a 4-year-long total bed-shitting against 2/3 of our division. I don't care about his record against cream puffs, Arkansas, South Carolina, or whatever hapless East team he's lucky enough to draw (Vanderbilt, injury-ravaged Tennessee, checked-out Florida).

Put as simply as possible, Sumlin is a CEO coach who frequently makes terrible, program-crippling hires (just off the top of my head: Snyder, our 1st OL coach, McKinney, Spavital, Morehead, Mazzone) + holds on to them far too long, and is one of the worst in the business at QB management. We have years of data showing this. I don't know what you'd expect to be different next year.

Yep. 8-4 is not an improvement. So wouldn't be surprised if he was fired, based on the expectations that were set by the AD at SEC media days.

He gets the chance to win go and out on a high note though.

If he beats Ole Miss and LSU, then I also wouldn't be surprised if he is retained. But that's a big IF.

Kind of like how Les Miles was given another shot.

Dr. Tridentds,
On what date do you think Starkel should have resumed his duties after a broken ankle on September 3?

I've seen the light. Sumlin needs to be paid more than every other coach in the FBS combined so that he doesn't leave us for someone else!

Based on just this one season, maybe. In total, nope. He’s had more than a fair shake.

He was healthy enough to play vs both Miss St and Auburn. I can accept the logic of letting Mond start vs Miss St. I cannot accept any reasoning that led to sticking with Mond for Auburn.

That Auburn game would have been completely different had we not wasted a quarter a half on Mond. Hell, the Miss St game would have gone differently too. Both of those games there were wide open WRs all over the field that Mond either could not see or could not get the ball to.
