At this point Reed is what he is

I completely disagree. He is inconsistent. When his feet are quiet and he is on time, he delivers a good ball. I agree that he never shows elite accuracy but he can be above average as a college passer, we’ve seen him do it this year. The last 2 games not withstanding. Coupled with his mobility I think his potential is to be a very very good college QB. There’s no quick fixes, we just have to keep developing our QB and all the positions around him.

If we let him go, it’ll be Tennessee or Kentucky or somewhere else that will get the better version of him and we will look real dumb when he is carving up other teams or worse, us. And you’d probably want Elko fired for letting him go despite advocating for it right now.

I’m just glad Elko runs the program and not the average fan. Lagway? Good grief. He was statistically worse than Marcel, by a lot, despite being one of the few players you could find in the portal who was playing around arguably MORE talent and weapons than Marcel. And newsflash, he’s going to get $$$ to go somewhere because there’s plenty of schools desperate for a QB, so he ain’t coming cheap to sit the bench.

Look at the portal QBs from last year. Mateer, Beck, Mendoza are the guys that got teams to the playoffs. Only Mendoza has been clearly better than Marcel.

The reality is developing Marcel is the right thing to do. And thank goodness that’s exactly what Elko is going to do.
Agreed, I can admit that he isn't perfect while also acknowledging that none of our portal options are likely to be upgrades. And by going to the portal we will probably overpay significantly. I think that money would be better spent on putting a better team around him.
He’s a good defensive line coach. He’s a NE guy so he has a lot of NJ/PA connections. Would love to have him back but we don’t have a spot for him. His biggest downside at the moment is that he’s been coaching at Syracuse recently so he probably doesn’t have the relationships built with immediate impact transfers or guys from the south in the last couple of cycles. You could do much worse IMO

100% G5/ACC Champ @ Kyle followed by Tech in Arlington is the optimal draw. Given the parity in the game today, styles make fights more than ever before and I feel really confident that we can beat anyone that we have a physicality advantage against with our Oline vs their Dline. It's not a coincidence that South Carolina and Texas were our toughest games down the stretch, both have really good defensive lines despite their other issues.

Ohio St is the likeliest #1 but they won't have a gimme against the winner of OU/ND so it's possible we get lucky and get either A) an OU team with a lot of offensive issues or B) a ND team we already beat.

You have to beat good teams to win it all but the 4/5 seed is potentially the best placement in this tournament to have a chance to make a run.

With the Jace and Gavin news, we are still waiting on Kent, Sorrell, (and Hensler). Prager, Camarillo, and Appel will all be based on their draft slots.

Just pitchers…

Prager - draft eligible, still a sophomore so he can still have leverage if he comes back for his Jr year.
Sdao - vocal on social media, coming back
Lamkin - coming back
Aschenbeck - out of eligibility, trying to get a waiver
Cortez - going to be a draft pick
Stewart - draft eligible, probably coming back
Rudis - draft eligible, but not really a pro prospect
Jones - draft eligible, likely goes pro or transfers based on how much he pitched down the stretch
Moss - coming back
Wilson - in the portal
Morton - in the portal
Jackson - coming back
Badmaev - out of eligibility
Peery - out of eligibility

As far as I remember, that’s all the guys that pitched much for us this year. The rest are guys who redshirted or didn’t pitch much. Who knows what they will do? But that’s the case every year, some will undoubtedly transfer down to mid-major schools chasing innings and who can blame them.

Just working through the starting lineup; (position players only)

C - Jackson Appel: Senior, sounds like he is done, won’t apply for another waiver.
1B - Ted Burton: out of eligibility.
2B - Kaeden Kent: in the transfer portal, TBD if he wants to play for Earley, probably would go anywhere but Texas.
SS - Ali Camarillo: draft decision, sounds like he wants to come back but may sign
3B - Gavin Grahovac: in the portal, people seem to think he will come out with the Earley hire. TBD whether he stays at 3rd or moves to another position.
LF - Caden Sorrell: in the portal
CF - Jace LaViolette: in the portal
RF - Braden Montgomery: Top 10 pick, will sign with MLB team
DH - Hayden Schott: has applied for another COVID waiver

Other contributors and recruits…
Jack Bell - TCU (transfer)
Hank Bard - out of eligibility
Blake Binderup - tweeted that he is coming back
Wyatt Henseler - visiting other schools (LSU)
Matt Bergevin - recommitted on Twitter
Travis Chestnut - applied for COVID waiver
Max Kaufer - in the portal
Jason Kelly was the pitching coach when he was at ASU w/ Earley. He is now the HC at Washington.

So something like this..
HC: Earley
AHC/Pitching: Kelly
RC/Hitting: Longly
Asst.: Will Fox (as per Brauny tweet).
If it’s Traylor we should go Tennessee couch burning, Greg Schiano, nuclear as a fan base and force the decision makers back to the negotiating table. We will be firing his arse 18 months later after he craters the program like Arkansas and Chad Morris. Being at UTSA he might as well still be a HS coach. As far as I’m concerned he doesn’t have a relevant track record to prepare him for being in charge of an SEC program.

Which one? Hopefully not the RB, that would make us really thin at that spot and he makes for a respectable FB.

Honestly for a guy who was totally ineffective at times for us, I would rather not have to play against him. His toughness and coming up clutch later in the season is enough to make me just a little concerned. I mean he is still the guy who somehow went from not being able to complete a pass in a half to beating Bama in like 4 weeks.

It seems strange that durkin would leave ole miss for a co dc position even if it was a huge pay raise

Kiffin floated his name for basically every single opening this cycle. It’s a matter of time before he jumps and Durkin will need a new job. And in the meantime, he has to keep fielding defenses with Ole Miss talent on the D-line. Which won’t exactly pad his resume, as this year showed. Honestly, we may not even need to give him a raise.

Is 85 still a hard cap with the covid rules?

The NCAA is moronically bringing that back w/o fully considering what it was going to do to rosters that gave every single player an extra year.

I think they knew exactly what it would do. I just think they had too much pressure from the bottom 75% of athletic departments that don't feel like they can pay for the extra scholarships after losing so much revenue during 2020.

re: Transfers

We entered the year we 83/85 scholarships filled. So we would need 30 spots to open if we want room to sign 32. There are 3 already in the portal.

By my count there's 11 guys who are graduating/going pro for sure already:
I.Spiller, J. Johnson, K. Green, J. Peevy, T. Johnson, M. Clemons, A. Hansford, L. O'Neal, K. Carper, S. Small.

3 guys that I think have a decision to make about the draft:
J. Wydermyer, A. Smith, D. Richardson

And 5 guys who have significant injury histories that make medical retirement seem at least possible (some of them might already be done for all I know):
H. Jones, C. Chapman, L. Matthews, B. Williams, M. Jones

That's potentially up to 22 before we even consider the additional guys who may enter the portal. So we don't necessarily need just a ton of transfers to hit that number.

I know it's bad form to speculate on attrition candidates, and I'm not advocating for anybody to lose their scholarships. But, the most obvious candidates to look for a new opportunity are the guys who are on scholarship but don't show up on the participation report at all. There are 4 such players:
D. Hunter, B. Mowry, J. Moten, J. Jefferson
247 Rating Explanation

247 lays it all out on their website. I ran the numbers and every recruit counts but it’s just negligible as you get over 25. For 2020, a class of the top 25 players in the country would get you to about 345. So for a theoretical full 32, it’s probably mathematically impossible to go over 350 or so.

What in the world. LSU possibly interested in Calzada and other places reporting Max interested in A&M

I mean I'm all for it. But why in the world would Max Johnson use his one free transfer to come to A&M? He is the same class as Haynes King and Haynes has been around for 2 years and is (maybe?) getting first team reps right now.

Also, we are going to get his brother too? And a Georgia CB? I guess we are going to use all 32 available spots, damn

re: Elko is gone

Posted by FortWorthAg15 on 12/11/21 at 9:38 am to
Georgia did it with Dan Lanning, and Clemson with both Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott on the offensive side of the ball. Heck, Notre Dame did it with Clark Lea after Elko left there. If we only had a top 50ish defense, maybe I would be looking to trade up. We have had uncanny coaching stability since Jimbo got here. Given our results under Elko I would value continuity in scheme and terminology over play calling experience.

re: Elko is gone

Posted by FortWorthAg15 on 12/11/21 at 8:31 am to
Before he got to A&M, his P5 coaching stops were Wake Forest and Notre Dame. He went to Penn. The assumption was that Elko was going to wait for the right opportunity. It's just that no one stopped to consider that, for him, that means being at a high academic private in a nice place to live. I think he will do well there and be a really good fit with their culture.

I would rather promote E-Rob than retread Muschamp, Mason, or DeRuyter. I be intrigued by Patterson because he was one of the originators of the 4-2-5 we use. But I doubt he is a good enough recruiter to be on this staff.
quote:

Jimbo seems to have slammed the door on the LSU rumors

Yep, he stopped just short of predicting that we would sign the #1 recruiting class. And then said he would have to be the dumbest coach on the planet to recruit that well to go have to play that team every year.
What happened to Ogunbiyi? I would think our best 5 would actually be swapping him in for Trainor. Hopefully, that suspension cost Johnson his job though. Green and Fatheree are our best tackles and give us the best chance.
