Because the government employees in this specific case weren't supposed to have lost their jobs. And since the government belongs to the people, we have every right to demand accountability. Whoever made this error is the embodiment of incompetence and probably represents the waste we want out. This massive screw up warrants termination IMO.
As far as the private sector, it is just that..."private". Unless you're a shareholder, it would be weird for anyone to cry over what a private citizen does with his business.

Amtrak isn't just a Northeastern company. Just because they have one good route between DC and NYC doesn't mean we should continue to fund it or try to keep it alive.

Privatization in this case has nothing to do with lowering costs and everything to do with keeping a dying, legacy service operating that was once viewed as critical. Let us not forget that Amtrak itself was a bailout for private rail companies that wanted to dump passenger service.
The network, as it is designed, cannot be converted to a High Speed Rail either. So you're extremely limited on how you can repurpose Amtrak. Anyone that is willing to buy it will want the subsidies to continue and that defeats the purpose of privatization.

So what's the solution genius? No one is going to buy it outright. Anyone that puts a bid will likely demand some kind of subsidy to keep it going until they eventually declare bankruptcy.

No one in their right mind is going to want Amtrak. It's a losing industry with no future. You can't even retrofit Amtrak with High Speed rail.

Y'all motherfrickers need a lesson in accountability. I'm all for cutting cost, but the administration needs to do their job correctly. Just because I voted for Trump doesn't mean I'm going to cheer for every move he and his staff make. I'm also not going to try to spin his mistakes. He needs to be called out when he screws up.

I don't know that this will be a major mistake (all government runs slow inefficient, and wasteful after all). But it does have potential to blow up on his face.
