If he can't be used I'd just hand it off to his brother and SIL Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Once they found their footing about midway through season 1 they did a pretty solid job w/Agents of SHIELD and now they would no longer have to deal w/being an appendage of a film universe that treats them like a red headed step child.

Studios can and do when they are willing to spend the time and money to do it. The reason it's gotten "worse" it b/c all the studios are run by corrupt Wall Street frick bois who only give a shite about profit and have a "this is good enough" mentality when looking for every little way to cut costs in order to boost their bonuses.
