Literally nobody else would have taken the job at that point. Luke was just there so they did it. Name 1 descent coach who would’ve taken the job.
Miles actually reached out for the job...in hindsight, good thing he wasn't hired. But, hiring one of the shittiest position coaches we've ever had was just a dumb move. Luke was given 4 years at $12.6 million - that's a lot of money that would have enticed anyone looking for their first HC job.

You telling me that nobody wanted a job that was paying over $4 million per year and they had the benefit of not having to win immediately due to the NCAA? Pffft!
Luke was a lazy arse hire by a terrible AD that had one foot out the door anyway.

I’m shocked Terry Bowden wasn’t on here

Croom’s record of 10-30 in the SEC is awful. He was to stubborn to change his offense, which was ranked 100+ all five years.

You guys have romanticized his tenure because he followed Hallman and was replaced by Saban. He was .570 during his time at LSU. That’s 2nd worst behind only Hallman over the last 40ish years - and seeing what the next 3 coaches were able to do puts that into perspective, IMO.
This is such a nice compliment

Ed Orgereron(would be unanimous on this list if he didn't end up at LSU but his tenure at Ole Miss speaks for itself)

How on earth did you overlook Croom and Joe Moorhead?
I don’t know much about Joe Moorhead personally, but Sly is a good man. Miss St. , or Alabama at the time, could have done much worse. See Price for proof.

On a list of utter shittiness and ineffectiveness as a HC, I'd go:
1. Chad Morris
2. Derek Dooley
3. John L. Smith
4. Ed Orgeron (Ole Miss)
5. Joker Phillips
6. That guy at Vandy
7. Sylvester Croom
8. Will Muschamp (SC)
9. That other guy from Vandy
10. Ron Zook
(after researching, apparently there was a guy at SC named Brad Scott whom I literally never even heard of, but apparently he was absolute God awful.)

A mediocre coach to be sure, but definitely not a Top 10 worst coaching hire candidate. He took the job when no one else would and brought stability back to the program after the Dennis Franchione-Mike Price fiascos. He guided us through probation and laid the groundwork for what eventually brought Saban to Tuscaloosa. In 2007 I most definitely couldn't see that. Now, with 14 years of hindsight, I've come to appreciate what he did for Alabama off the football field.
Thank you! I have been saying that for years for now to some of our Bama fans.
He was hired to right the ship and he did.
I think anyone would put in on the list and not have Mike Price as the worst!!
