Gerry couldn’t handle the success. He didn’t trust anyone and tried to micro manage everything. It was a little bit like O at Ole Miss. He helped put us back on a winning path and most LSU fans are great full to him. He established a really good recruiting pipeline that benefited Nick. He actually came back to an LSU game a few years ago with several other former coaches. Curley was not invited.
The 1996 Auburn bring back the magic game is one of my favorite games. I was a Senior at the time and remember getting deluged with beer in the student section after Troy Twillie’s end zone interception. Good times!

Agree. I loved Gerry Dinardo.

DuBose yes, Shula no. He did poorly but had the deck stacked against him from the start. He took on the team during some sanctions and still managed 10 wins in at least one season.
Not saying he was some great coach, but definitely not one of the ten worst hires since 1992

Glen Mason was Georgia’s head coach for 7 days in 1995

Matt Luke is was easily the worst HC hire that Ole Miss made. The guy was hired simply for his family connections and was a disaster from the start.
Houston Nutt would follow him. Nutt had success the first couple of years based solely on the talent that Orgeron brought to Ole Miss. He had so many players in academic trouble by the time that Nutt finally left due to Nutt simply going through the motions.
Orgeron brought in a ton of talent at Ole Miss and worked relentlessly. However, his downfall was his inability to bring in a good QB. Snead wasn't eligible until the year that Orgeron was fired. He didn't know how to be a HC and he overworked the players and most hated him by the time he was fired.

I see what you mean by his corniness. But at the end of the day 9 wins is 9 wins. Name another coach that has got y’all to 9 wins lately

I don't see how you can spin 9 wins with the 2016 team as a positive.
I guess we'll agree to disagree.

John L Smith (does he count?)
Smith was an utter disaster but I give him a pass because he was an emergency hire. That having been said, given his history of nervous breakdowns on the job, no one should have hired him ever again for a P5 head coaching gig. Any FBS head coaching job for that matter. Even in an emergency.

I feel like Shula doesn't belong on this list.

9 wins is bad for teams like LSU Bama and Georgia but not for Tennessee dude come on. This isn’t 1998. Y’all are not some powerhouse. Take your 9 wins and be happy.

Literally nobody else would have taken the job at that point. Luke was just there so they did it. Name 1 descent coach who would’ve taken the job.

I've never inferred any of what you claim.
Your hyperbole surrounding an arbitrary nine win plateau has nothing to do with the underlying issue which was Jones' coaching ability.
The 2016 team proves Jones' coaching ability compared to his on the field talent.

It was '95 but yeah that was amazing, especially after the crushing losses at Auburn in '92 and '94 (quite possibly the most crushing loss in Curley's entire tenure though Colorado St. and USM are up there).
The Reveille has a good article on it here:
LINK
quote:
Although the manner of the (1994) loss (at Auburn) stung on its own, the LSU collapse cost it a winning season in 1994 (this is wrong but whatever it's the Reveille LOL), continuing a long-standing trend that the LSU-Auburn game determines the success of the Tigers’ season.
From 1992-1994, LSU posted a collective 8-16 record after losing to Auburn each year. After beating Auburn in seven of the 10 seasons under Les Miles, LSU has recorded five 10-win-or-more seasons.
“I used to always tell the team, ‘That Auburn game always decides our season,’” Wiley said.
It was absolutely true. The Auburn game was LSU's Berlin Wall and it finally came crashing down in '95.
ETA: Interestingly enough, DiNardo's worst loss also came against Auburn in '99. Blitzkrieged 41-7 and it was downright embarrassing. That was the day it became crystal clear that Gerry was done. Put up a fight against UGA and Bama most of the rest of the games the team just quit on him.
I hadn't heard this bit before about giving the Rules Committee white jerseys. That's awesome:
quote:
When Sports Information Director Herb Vincent, equipment manager Jeff Boss and DiNardo presented LSU’s case to NCAA Rules Committee, they came prepared with a gift for each committee member.
“We ... made an LSU white jersey for everybody on the committee with their name on their back,” DiNardo said.
The combination of logic and bribery worked, and the committee approved the petition: The Tigers could wear white at Tiger Stadium.
The night the roar was restored and magic reigned once more.

That was the worst April Fools joke ever in football.
