Paul Finebaum Takes Unprovoked Shot At Longtime Announcer Gary Danielson
HISTORICAL ARCHIVE, MINIMUM USAGE FEE APPLIES;
Longtime ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum, a big supporter of the SEC, is not happy with what SEC announcer Gary Danielson said about Neyland Stadium this week. Danielson said that Neyland Stadium is “just about the same” as the SEC's other stadiums. Finebaum then went off...
quote:

“There’s kind of an unwritten rule if you’re not so full of hubris and arrogance and think you know everything,” Finebaum said. “It’s not like Gary was stopped at the Atlanta airport and said, “What stadium do you think?” He was being interviewed by a reporter who works in Knoxville for the Knoxville News-Sentinel group and he’s coming to Knoxville. So only Gary could stick his foot in his mouth by not praising the greatest stadium in college football, Neyland Stadium! That’s the part I don’t understand.”

“Next year when he’s doing the Big Ten Saturday afternoon Game of the Week when it’s Minnesota at Purdue, and he’s in a cornfield in West Lafayette, he’s going to have to say, ‘This is like any other Big Ten stadium,'” Finebaum said. “… I may never get over that interview you did with Gary Danielson.”

If I were to go goat hunting, Finebaum would be my decoy.

I understand Finebaum defending his alma mater, and Neyland is historic, but the greatest? Still, I get it, and Danielson gets on my nerves much more than Finebaum.

I'd love the hear the opinion Gary gave...

Neyland is good, but it's not the best in the SEC...

I am LSU fan, die hard, but after experiencing Bryant Denny against Ole Miss this year, as far as quality stadium and fan experience goes, it's top notch

Bama does everything with excellence... People need to go see the gross amount of money they have dropped in that campus. It's easy to see why they have so many out of state kids attending there now

The stadium in and of itself is fine. The problem is that it’s full of 100,000 a-holes like finebaum.

Paul must know the Alabama decline is real if he’s a Tennessee fan again. It must be 2004.

Danielson has been around long enough to know that whatever stadium you are in (or going to) "is one of the best stadiums in college football". It doesn't matter what stadium it is (as long as it's not Vanderbilt.)

Every fanbase seems to think their stadium is the loudest, or the most unique. So, this is one of those questions that is easy for reporter to ask, easy for him to answer, and the fans eat it up. If he really wanted to, he could then follow it up with "but there are so many great stadiums in the SEC" or something along those lines. Instead, yeah, he steps right in it.
