Texas is a southern (mostly) state. Oklahoma is not.

I'm excited with reservations like most on this board at the high level of competition both hopefully bring to the conference. It will be fun to play more big games.
However this is the first time the SEC has added a school that truly is not southern. We might have a lot of similarities with Oklahoma and their good people but they are most definitely a southwestern state.
ETA: I Keep forgetting Mizzou is in the SEC.

We moved into the business of having states that are part Southern and part not when we added Mizzou and Aggie (not to mention already having Florida).

TX is literally the most Southwestern state there is.

Oklahoma is more Southern than Texas in every measurable way other than geography.

What do you consider “south”? Serious question.

You're right. I'll be totally honest. I literally always forget about them and that they're in the SEC.

I would argue Texas is not a southern state. Texas is Texas. Unique in its own way.
Now Oklahoma might not be southern the way Alabama or Mississippi is, but it holds similar values. I've spent a ton of time in OK. It's full of people raised right with manners and decency. But it's also full-on poor white trash. I think they're going to be a great fit.
I don't want to get too deep or turn this political, but the cultures do differ. I think that has to do with the demographics. Most southern states have high black populations. Oklahoma does not. They do have high Indian populations which make them unique in their own way too. Not saying either is better or worse, but it creates differences for sure.

Oklahoma is a border state. While no parts are truly Southern, south & SE OK feels a lot more Southern than the rest of the state. Tulsa feels more midwesterny. West OK is just farm country.
Parts of east TX feel like the South, but not sure if that = 'Southern'

I mean, ops not wrong. Oklahoma doesnt fit in any of the typical regional stereotypes.
Southwest is like west texas, new mexico and Arizona. Oklahoma is nothing like those culturally or geographically.
It's not the South despite the fact it looks like the South and is culturally very similar because it's too far north.
It's too far South to be the North or the Midwest and its west of the Mississippi so its not the East either.
Even using the civil war alliance doesnt work because Oklahoma was neutral and allowed both sides and resupplied both. Indian tribes from Oklahoma even fought for both sides during the civil war.
So, yeah. We're cultural misfits.

Yes and no. The Piney Woods are culturally the same as Mississippi, Alabama, and rural Georgia and Tennessee.
