16 too many.

6 or 8 is right number.

It’s simple really:

Take the top 8 in the BCS rankings and seed them accordingly. The first round is played at the top four teams home stadiums, then the semis are done how they are now. Not all conferences are created equal. Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina would both have 3-5 losses with a ten game SEC schedule, I’m fricking tired of hearing about them already. Enough.

Most of the time they are.... last season under my suggestion the playoffs would have been

1 LSU (auto 1) vs 17 Memphis (highest G5)
2 OSU (auto 2) vs 7 Baylor (at Large)
3 Clemson (Auto 3) vs 6 Oregon (auto 5)
4 Oklahoma (auto 4) vs 5 UGA (at large)

2018 would have been

1 Alabama (auto 1) vs 9 Washington (auto 4)
2 Clemson (Auto 2) vs 8 UCF (G5)
3 Notre Dame (at large) vs 6 OSU (auto 5)
4 OU (auto 3) vs 5 UGA (at large)

7 Ranked Michigan 10-2 gets left out over 10-3 Washington which I think is fair

2017

1 Clemson (auto 1) v 12 UCF (12-0, G5)
2 OU (auto 2) v 8 USC ( auto 4)
3 UGA (auto 3) v 6 Wisconsin ( At Large)
4 Bama (at large) v 5 OSU ( auto 5)

Three year sample all 5 P5 champs are in top 8 except 2018 and Washington was 9.

I think 2017 would be fair giving USC a spot since they hold a championship and were 11-2 over 10-3 #7 Auburn. I think this works.

ETA: Every year since playoffs were starter all 5 P5 champs were in top 8, except 2018 and Washington was #9

I think it’s pretty simple the solution... but have changed my best format a number of times..
the easiest Is simple.

Committee still does their rankings.
You must be Top 10 to be eligible for 8 team playoff
All P5 champions in the top 10 qualify
Highest ranked G5 champion in the Top 10 qualifies.
At large spots still available, filled by non champion top 10 teams by highest rank.

First round - 3rd week in December played at..
just like current playoff location advantage goes to 1,2,3,4 ranked teams.. 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5
Belk bowl, Texas Bowl, Sun Bowl, Holiday Bowl
Winners are re-ranked after games 1-4 and placed in current semis in Dec31/Jan1 in ( Rose/Sugar, Cotton/Orange, Fiesta/Peach )
Nation championship played like current 10 days later.

Using 2019...
Texas Bowl (1)LSU beats (8) Wisky
Belk Bowl (2) OSU beats (7) Baylor
Sun Bowl (3) Clemson loses (6) Oregon..just for fun
Holiday Bowl (4) OU beats (5) UGA

Peach Bowl (1) LSU beats (6) Oregon
Fiesta Bowl (2) OSU beats (4) OU

NC (1) LSU beats (2) OSU

Using 2020..Bama wins SEC, Clemson ACC, OSU Big10, ISU B12, USC PAC12, Cinn AAC..
1-Bama
2-Clemson
3- OSU
4- ND
5- TexAm
6-ISU
7-UGA
9-Cinn
10-USC

Belk - Bama vs USC
Texas - Clemson UCinn
Sun- OSU vs ISU
Holiday- ND vs AM

Benefits.. Conf Champs given priority, but not Automatic.. keeps a 8-5 FSU ACC champ from getting in; which had happened in the last 15 years. Gives G5 a path, but not a guarantee, opens door for 1 loss teams that played real tough schedule.. props up some Traditional lower tier bowls.

... as another change to college football ..
9 conf games.. I would also like to eliminate divisions and go top 2 teams.. keep 2 traditional rivalries and rotate 7.
1 P5 OOC you schedule
1 Money game if you choose, G5 or FCS
1 P5 OOC scheduled to you before the season announce them on July 4.. .. get rid of the we play so and so when my kid who hasn’t been born yet plays his senior year for a coach who’s still in HS himself.

Those that can’t earn it, don’t deserve to be in it. Playoffs should strive to be exclusive not inclusive. You didn’t get in so the 1st response is to want to expand it but it should be to try harder and do better next year.

If you win out - especially in a P5 conference - you should get to compete.

There's conversation to be had about scheduling requirements, but the big fix is expansion.

Then why do so many sports keep expanding playoffs and why is CFB the only major team sport to limit their playoff format to 4 teams?

The playoff doesn’t need to be expanded.

Was listening to a roundtable on YouTube (from ESPN I think). The discussion was around Herbstreit saying indeed it is a broken system. In essence comparing this year to next year we already know Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson and some other team will get in in 2021, 22 & 23. Herbstreit thinks that's wrong and the roundtable did also. So I agree with you.

I would agree with except... some schools get the benefit of the doubt based on their name, not their conference like some would like to believe.

Example imo... in 2017, when Bama got in over OSU because OSU was a 2 loss champion and Bama didn’t win their div with 1 loss... argue all you want, but if had been any if the other 13 teams in the SEC that had only 1 LSUs but loss their division.., you wouldn’t have gotten in over OSU. Argue, scream, ridicule all you want... in your heart you know I’m right.

8 team playoff.

Power 5 Champs
Two at large
Highest Ranked G5

First round hosted by top seed.

Could you imagine a home playoff game in College Football?

I'm still trying to figure out why a team that wasn't even the best in their conference is allowed to play for a championship.

If you can't win a conference championship game with the Playoffs on the line, you don't belong in. When UVA lost in the NCAAT to a 16 seed in the first round, no one said "Yeah but they're obviously a better team, we're gonna put them in the Sweet Sixteen anyway."

Your wins in the regular season should only hold value towards your place in the CCG. After that, its a blank state.

But tv execs want compelling games (which they still haven't gotten) more than fans want a deserving champion, so this is the bullshite we end up with.

Hell no, not as long as the Pac-12 is included.

No one can provide a valid football reason for including the Pac-12 other than "they're Power 5." They're no more deserving than the American.

Exhibit A for keeping the playoffs at 4 teams.

This was a shitty game and Washington was a shitty opponent when Washington was a 4 seed. So play it as a 1-8 game? Hell no.

The Pac-12 being a dogshit conference renders your massive wall of text meaningless.

Because there is no equity among conferences.

Why is that so difficult for some of you people to understand?

Letting 2nd place teams in makes a helluva lot more sense than letting in champions of dogshit conferences.

Bama came into this year having finished 3-9 the last 5 years, they wouldn't be a lock to the CFP if they lost to Florida.

Not true at all Bama has been the most dominant team in the entire country all season and they have the best resume with blowout wins over two top 8 teams.

You know why I'm good with it? Because when it comes to college football, I'm selfish. I'd rather watch the 1-16 and 2-15 matchups than the Poulan Weedeater Bowl.

And the chance my Tigers could get in as a 13 seed every 4-5 years makes it even better.
