While at Alabama he did a pretty good job of working with the players he was given. And he's good at scheming things up offensively.
At the same time, he also called some bad games and made bad decisions. The loss against Ole Miss for example, he was the one who wanted to start Cooper Bateman over Jake Coker. He got his wish and it went horrible. He eventually made it work that year though between Coker and Henry, even if not what he actually wanted.
I don't know that anyone called him a QB whisperer though. It's not like he turned Blake Sims into an NFL QB. He did however likely get the most possible out of him. Same for Coker, didn't turn him into an NFL QB, but did get the most possible out of him.

I haven't really heard anyone credit Lane for his "development" all I've heard from folks is he found a diamond in the rough & his & Charlie Weiss Jr's play calling helped elevate Chambliss to elite status! So like the combination of Chambliss' abilities paired with that offense and the play calling!

You have to look no further than Matt Corral to see how good a job that Kiffin can do, but in this particular case Kiffin pretty much fine-tuned rather than developed.

If Weis and land thought Chambliss would turn into what he has, then they would've had him starting.

They broke Corral's and Dart's legs, too. Chambliss was Kiffin's first QB that wasn't hobbled by the end of the season.

So he called a ton of great games and maximized the talent of his two quarterbacks that weren’t NFL talent regardless of the coach? Is there really anything else to have revisionist history over now that he’s the LSU head coach?
Probably the only story to me that is deeply concerning is the Bentley benching and his love affair with the Dallas chick. For now he’s giving us the illusion that’s in the past, and people don’t care when you win anyway.

I think there are definitely things you can’t teach.
He takes care of the football and makes quick decisions. He sees it and rips it.
But he was also put in an offense that allows him to make quick decisions.

Chambliss is an exceptional QB no doubt. He was an exceptional dual threat who was actually a little better as a runner his last year at Ferris St. No doubt he had all of the qualities to be successful but of course wasn't a known quantity yet as far as playing in the SEC. That is why Simmons started in the beginning. He completed 61% of his passes at Ferris St and averaged 195 yards per game, he rushed for 196 yards per game, stats that almost seemed like those from back in time.
He proved how talented he was and that is why Kiffin signed off on bringing him in. However he was put into a system that took way more advantage of his passing skills and and also gave him much better options and easier decisions in Kiffin's offense. Chambliss threw for almost 4000 yards during the regular season and completed over 66% of his passes and ran for only 44 yards per game.
Kiffin's main objective in designing offenses is to play to the QB's talent & Strength and to simplify the decision making process. So yes Kiffin didn't necessarily develop him but he did have a huge had in Chambliss' success.

Lane knows how to stack the QB room. He knows he gets his bills paid through the QB. Remember when he signed the Oklahoma State starting quarterback just to sit the bench. His insurance policies are better than most in football. It may not necessarily be Lane's eye for talent or his whisperer ability but he has made QBs look stupid good under him. Even the CFL talent like Coker, Matt Corrall, Sims.

1. Our offensive line hadn't gelled completely yet
2. He didn't/doesn't avoid hits like TC. That could be height differential or running style or both.
I wish Austin nothing but the best he didn't bitch or moan after getting benched and put his name in the portal without fanfare. Same with Cayden Lee. Austin needs to learn to check down or throw away and he should be fine as a starter his arm talent is great.

I think it’s definitely true, but lanes job isn’t to develop a serviceable qb. It’s to have a serviceable qb under center. Whether lane coached him up or if he was that guy before he got there. Lane found him on some bullshite roster, said that’s the guy and it worked. Still gotta credit the man for finding him and knowing he’d plug into system seamlessly
