bro 2019 bama was lucky they didnt get blown the frick out. they had 3 tds that were flukey as frick. one was a silent quick count with our all American db looking at the sidelines one was a punt return where a face mask completely reversed the flow of the play and then we should have never been in press man with 2 minutes left.

Come on, let's not talk about "flukey" stuff here...
they were rolling to a sure score (well inside FG range, almost certainly going to be a TD), when Tua just literally drops the football without any contact. As I remember, he almost could have walked in untouched, if he doesn't drop the ball.

They also had a punt snap that sailed over the punter's head for a 20 yd loss, starting us inside our own 30. We didn't get a 1st down on that possession, but still came away with a FG.

So if you want to talk shite, that's at least 6, probably 10 pt swing on fluke plays.
Final margin of victory was 5 pts.

These debates are dumb. No one will ever agree and no possible way of backing up any claim…so I’ll play

In the SEC (why are Nebraska or Miami even mentioned, read the OP):

1) 2019 LSU

2+) everyone else

They barely won 6 or 7 of their games and were an 8-4 type team without Cam. No one else or few others made any noise in the NFL, including their next best player Nick Fairly.

LSU had a great offense but a mediocre D. Gave up 37 or more 4 times in their undefeated regular season season, including 38 vs 3-9 Vandy. Gave up 20 or more 9 times. Won by 3 vs 4 loss AU in BR, beat 5 loss Texas by one score in a game that went down to the wire. I watched it. Beat Alabama by 5 in Tusc, where they melted down right before the half and gave LSU 10 pts. Bama scored 41. As I said great O but mediocre D. That’s being kind. You have to consider their HC as well. It’s really impossible to crown them but they are in the mix. They were the opposite of the 1992 undefeated Alabama team that was great on D but mediocre on O. The O was drudgery to watch. They may have been as ordinary as the 2019 LSU D. At least they had David Palmer who was a thrill a minute.

Bill Connelly and others say that Alabama had a better team. Mack Jones, Devonte Smith, Jalen Waddle, Najee Harris, Brian Robinson, Landon Dickerson, et al., just on O. Will Anderson, Chistian Barmore, Christian Harris, Patrick Surtain, Dylan Moses, Malachi Moore, et al. on D. 3 of the top 5 Heisman vote getters, including the winner. Beat everyone by 2 TDs or more, except UF who snuck in the back door late. Unlike LSU who had multiple 1 score games. Played an all SEC reg season schedule. Blasted both playoff teams.

Of course this LSU board disagrees. The ‘19 LSU team was great but not the greatest since there have been a few who were better. In reality it’s impossible to say. 1945 Army obliterated their opposition with their closest game being vs #2 Navy by 19. Cost 10-0, Rose Bowl winning Alabama a shot at a NC. 1971 Neb smoked Alabama in a 1 vs 2 matchup. They would be in the mix as well as 1995 Neb. 2004 USC who destroyed undefeated OU 55-19, though they, like LSU had a few close calls. There are other great teams as well like the undefeated 2001 Miami team with all of those great players on both sides of the ball.

Offensively...yes that 2019 LSU was one of the top 2 of all time.

However, their defense and special teams were average at best.

They struggled with injuries that season. They all got healthy for the A&M game and playoffs. They played pretty good then

One thing people don’t always look at is style matchups and how one team matches up against another team, especially in an underdog role.

For example, let’s say Team A runs two TE Power-I and tries to shove it down your throat. They can trample you to death but can’t throw it a lick. Well, in that case, it’s better for Team B to have an A+ defensive front and C secondary than vice versa. That All-State FS isn’t worth much against isos and traps and powers and counters with the DL getting blown off the ball. But the All-State MLB is valuable against that style.

If you look at national championship teams and their closest games (or even losses), they were often against teams that had an unusual ability to match or mitigate their strengths or exploit their weaknesses.

2019 LSU’s weakness was its defense. Well, it is going to be pretty damn hard to hold down a healthy Tua and all those receivers without a great D, so they played some close games against teams that could score. The same for 2020 Bama.

2001 Miami’s weakness was Ken Dorsey. Dorsey wasn’t a bad player at all, but he was not the future NFL stud that Portis, Shockey, and Johnson were on O and others on D. In the close win against BC, Dorsey threw four picks and they damn near lost.

Look at 2011 LSU and Bama. They blew out tons of teams but couldn’t score on each other because their passing games were limited and the defensive fronts were too good to push around.

The teams that beat Bama at their most physical were teams with a dynamic QB that could throw and improvise. If you tried to just push them around, you were going to get stuffed. Same thing with Kirby’s peak UGA teams.

1995 Nebraska’s weakness was they did not have players with NFL talent in the passing game - and generally didn’t in the Osborne-Solich years. Well, that’s okay against Kansas, Kansas State, rock bottom OU, and pre-Stoops UF. But when it’s the Selmon bros., Casillas and Bosworth, and all those future NFL Hall of Famers at DL/LB like FSU and Miami had back in the day, then you have a matchup problem and you’re typically going to have a hard time scoring. I have often said that 1995 Nebraska’s dominance had a lot to do with playing opponents less capable of exploiting a one-dimensional run-oriented offense than in previous seasons.

2018 Clemson had one of the most balanced rosters in CFB history when Sunshine was in the driver’s seat. They were never pushed in games he started and finished. They may not have had a supernatural passing game like 2019 LSU, but they were good to great everywhere.

You’re not going to lose too many games with a future #1 pick at QB and three first rounders in the DL.

Literally the game before lsu Clemson won at the last second. Osu physically whipped them all game. And needed a superhero effort from the qb just to get back in the game. Unc also had them on the ropes(think they went for two in overtime to win).

It's wild that so many on this board see #11 in the country as "mediocre".

You were 8th in the 14 team SEC in scoring defense and 9th in total defense. IMO, that is the definition of “mediocre”. Actually mediocre is a bit generous since you were in the lower half of your conference, but at least the top of the lower half. That’s how you compared to your peers.

You did [embed]not[/embed] finish nationally in the top 25 in total defense or scoring defense. Not in 2019. But the national rankings are not as relevant as conference, since they played roughly the same teams.

Looking at overall rankings is a simplistic way of looking at it IMO as everyone doesn't play the same schedules. Texas, Clemson, and Oklahoma were very good offenses that the rest of the SEC generally didn't play.
