This comment is depressing.

This video always reminds me of the scale of the war and how successful D-Day was.
The casualties on the eastern front is mind boggling.

This x1000.
Playing by yourself in twilight in the cool fall weather…
Only thing that could be better is the sound of the ball rattling in the hole after. Still waiting on that one

Property is property in America and it’s sacrosanct. Regardless of your opinion of said property, protection of it is fundamental to American society.

This is all because of $200k worth of legos?

Well if the Austrian scored it, then it must be official haha.
Scale and tactical execution were greater but isn’t that largely due to Midway setting the stage 2 years earlier? At least Midway was a fair fight more or less with Japan at full strength. By 1944 at the Battle of Leyte, we had 34 carriers vs their 4.
Political and strategic significance are not even close.
I understand the other battles but this one makes no sense.

Yeah - Why we created their own island for them called the soccer board.

You are proving my point….we took out their entire carrier fleet, many high ranking naval officers and pilots, etc.
It was a crushing blow. Also, don’t forget that our navy was responsible for keeping their resources limited cutting off labor and materials from China, Southeast Asia, Guadalcanal, etc.
Do you think if we lost all our carriers this would’ve been effective or do you think Japan would’ve been emboldened to grab more resources? Yes, we would’ve ultimately out resourced them but would’ve taken significant time to recover.
This is opinion but I also believe American morale if we lost all 4 carriers after Pearl Harbor would’ve been very low and impacted war efforts back home.

We weren’t turning out aircraft carriers…. Not saying we would’ve lost but it would’ve made the war drastically different and longer.
We had 4 operational heavy aircraft carriers in the Pacific during Midway, same amount as Japan. We destroyed all 4 of Japans. Afterwards, capital poured in and we went overdrive on production to capitalize on the naval superiority and get in a position to never give it up.
If Japan did that to us, they would’ve done the same.

I’d argue it is definitely one of the most consequential - WW2 is the most consequential war to ever occur. In all the other naval battles you mentioned, how many could put aircraft on top and invade another country from the skies which would have otherwise been impossible without controlling the seas.
If we lost the battle of Midway, Japan has an open pacific to start attacking the western coast and they would’ve plowed everything they had into their navy forces with the momentum and the opportunistic advantage to hold the pacific. Instead, we controlled it and brought the invasion to them and not vice versa.
While we did fight a 2 front war, it never got close to our land. If it did, it would’ve changed

Stopped reading after NY Times….
How in the world does this guy know the excitement level of other countries? I promise you Mexico is excited about the event, though not very optimistic about their squad.
It would be insanely expensive to do a big World Cup Trip. Also, the games are spread out all over North America in huge cities with hotels stacked on hotels - they were never going to be close to capacity / demand surges.
FIFA is to blame for ticket prices and their leadership needs to take a dirt nap. Won the lottery in Houston for Cat 2 and I am sitting at the very fricking top of the stadium while they reserve high priced seats without the demand.
Also, its soccer - everyone in America knows no one cares until the ball is dropped at kickoff.

I actually thought it looked like a great atmosphere. Those were some great games too.
That error by the 3B in the Sunday game loomed large. No lead is safe and no error goes unpunished in College Baseball which makes it so much fun to watch.
Just wish LSU participated this year :wah:

The atmosphere on campus was incredible.
Man, I forgot about that Tornado. Didn’t the girlfriend of the punter or kicker pass away in the storm?

Good point - I agree.
I never thought about that season in that way. The impact got lost in my repressed memories of wanting to jump off the Superdome in the Natty and then wanting to jump off Tiger Stadium after the TJ Yeldon screen pass the following year.

I was at the game behind the field goal with the game winner in overtime.
Best, most intense, game I have ever seen.
However, how did this game have consequences of historical proportions other than haunt LSU fans after the rematch (if the fricking Okie St kicker)?
