So by that thinking, doesn't that make Michigan 1997 the greatest team ever? After all, they had the GOAT OF GOATS on their bench who threw only a few passes that year. Quality of bench right? Couldn't get on the field their starting QB was so good. Brady's 15 pass attempts shows how good Michigan was right?

Ohh I don’t remember 97 Michigan having the greatest roster of all time. If you think having the best player at one position makes you the greatest team of all time that’s a reflection of your knowledge. I’d certainly never make that claim.

No you’re just obtuse, it was an illustration of how deep they were and why a pedestrian D by all time standards would be in trouble. Somehow you correlated that to having a great qb means you also have the greatest roster ever(can’t help with you that, you just need to brush up on ball). But yes having 16 future all pros is a great indicator of having one of the best rosters ever assembled. But good catch and on tom Brady being a great qb, that’s some real football acumen you’re working with champ.

Interesting thing about the 2011 season is that while I was watching the GOTC, I was never worried. It wasn't because I knew LSU would win. Rather, it was because I knew it would take the "best of all time" to beat that LSU team.
In fact, I wasn't nervous about any game that year, until Maze's 42-yard punt return in the BCSNCG. Why? Because it was six-times the number of punt return yards the Tigers had given up total all season. It was a big indicator that something was wrong.
So, while I think they shouldn't have gotten the rematch, and I think a large part of LSU getting shut out was Les Miles' bad coaching, I'm okay with saying that 2011 Bama might be the #2 SEC team of all time.
Just note that even with that, I believe the 2011 LSU defense was better than the 2011 Bama defense, because they did two things Bama didn't have to do:
1) Play an out of conference team with a top-40 offense, while LSU played two: Oregon and West Virginia.
2) Get Jordan Jefferson to a national championship game.

2019 LSU was the greatest college offense ever. Burrow put up Timmy Chang Hawaii numbers, vs an SEC gauntlet and then the CFB playoffs. That wasn't just unprecedented, it was thought to be impossible.
The defense had some talented guys, and played well in several games. And they always played well enough to win the game. But they didn't come remotely close to the dominating levels we had seen from, say LSU and Alabama defenses of the past. I know people used the excuse that they didn't need to since Burrow was putting 40-50 points up, but for example Vandy scored 30+. Ole Miss' QB ran for over 200 yds.

Among the other reasons to disqualify the 2020 Bama team, the fact that they only played SEC teams is totally negated by the restrictions on practices that year. Nobody had a good defense because they could only practice contact in a very limited way.
So, all of the offensive "records" Bama likes to point to in support of that team are boosted by the situation that wasn't true for any other season.

I think LSU's 2019 is the greatest offense ever.
I'm not sure they are the greatest ever because that defense stunk it up more than half the season. Did get decent near the end of the season, but never dominant.

I don't think they were elite defensively but they were definitely very good.
People hang on to a bad game or two and trash the defense when it was actually very good, especially with the injuries in the first part of the year.
The Ole Miss game was mid November, so "early season" isn't in play anymore. And in that game, their QB ran for 212 yds and 4 TDs on 21 carries (10 yds a carry).
Just looking things up, at least for those 4 teams, they scored higher than their season's average vs us. Vandy 18 over, Ole Miss 10 over. Bama close to 10 over.
Again, that 2019 offense was a thing of unsurpassed beauty, likely the best in modern college football. But for the entire TEAM to be considered the best all-time, you need a defense too. And that D was way too inconsistent.
