As a Tiger fan, I have to disagree. We gave up 38 (Texas), 38 (Vanderbilt), 41 (Alabama), 37 (Ole Miss).
The Ole Miss game was mid November, so "early season" isn't in play anymore. And in that game, their QB ran for 212 yds and 4 TDs on 21 carries (10 yds a carry).
Texas was one of the better offenses in the country, and on the road. #15 in scoring, #9 FEI.
Vanderbilt didn't score 38 on the defense; they scored two defensive touchdowns in that game. Also another road game.
Alabama was also one of the best offenses in the country, also on the road. #3 in scoring, #2 in FEI.
Ole Miss is probably the worst performance, also on the road. However, that game was 31-7 at halftime and 44-23 going into the 4th quarter. Burrow threw a pick giving them a short field and there were a lot of reserves playing in that second half, so it got sloppy.

Just looking things up, at least for those 4 teams, they scored higher than their season's average vs us. Vandy 18 over, Ole Miss 10 over. Bama close to 10 over.
Those numbers don't seem to be accurate, at least for Alabama and Texas. Alabama averaged like 47 PPG that season, so LSU held them below that.
Texas averaged around 35, so LSU gave up 3 more there.

Nonetheless, you don't get "yeah but" excuses when you are talking about greatest team of all time. 4 teams put 37 or greater on the scoreboard against us when they played us. A 4-8 Ole Miss team had it's QB run for over 200 yds and 4 scores.
We fricking dropped in the rankings from #1 to #2 (and that was in November), purely because of the defense. That's why there was any question that we might not have gotten the top seed in the playoffs over Ohio State. The concern was that if anyone could reasonably contain Burrow et al, we'd be beatable. That concern was unfounded because nobody ever slowed us down (*Auburn did), but the defense was absolutely sub-par.
And it shouldn't have been. We had star players at every level, but they just weren't living up to recent LSU standards. And that's with Aranda, a supposed "genius" coaching the D.

My argument was not that 2019 LSU was the greatest team of all time, I'm not even getting into that can of worms.
I'm just saying the defense was much better than perceived. It was very good, not great, not elite, not average, not below average, not subpar.
They played a lot of good offenses, especially on the road, and any defense is going to give up points with the rules we have today in that scenario.

that Texas team for example. They scored less than 30 in their other 4 losses (this was a 5 loss team ftr), and less than the 38 they scored on us in 2 of their wins. Baylor held them to 10.
That Ole Miss team was held under 20 by Auburn, A&M, and ... Memphis.
That Vandy game, they were a 3 win team. That 38 pts they scored was their season high, matched in their OOC game with East Tennessee State. You pointed out that we gave them 2 defensive scores, so let's look at that- 24 points on offense. That would still be the 2nd highest output of the season for them. They scored 10 or less 6 times. Florida beat them 56-0.
That Bama game, we were up 46-34 and kicking off with 1:37 left in the game. 1 play later, it's 46-41, and we have to a) recover their onside kick, and b) get a 1st down to run the clock out. We were up 33-13 at the half, and damn near blew it. They had 5 possessions in the 2nd half, we made them punt once. They scored TDs on the other 4.
That defense was as bad as any we'd seen since Saban arrived, until 2020 and 2023 happened.

I agree, but didn't you get the sense that no matter how many points they gave up, that LSU offense would still outscore their opponent?
I felt that way watching 1994 Penn State's offense.

I realize that, but if you read my original post, I stated that I was just discussing the defensive performance and not necessarily the greatest team argument.

I mean, that's fine. I would submit that you're just looking at the low points of the season and disregarding the big picture, which is obviously your right.
Both the Vanderbilt and especially the Ole Miss games were situations were LSU went up big and played sloppy with some reserves in the second half. The injury issues vs Vandy and Texas were pretty well documented.
Alabama was just a very good offense on the road where a true freshman in Stingley got taken advantage of a couple of times.
If you zoom out and look at the season as a whole, the 2019 defense was very good, especially in clutch moments. I won't say they weren't sloppy a few times though.

It's insane we almost let that one slip after being up that big on those suckers at half, thankfully Joe and Clyde helped us preserve it
It was the happiest moment of my LSU fan life, hadn't beaten those suckers in 8 years while they became Nick's dynasty and we regressed to relevant but mid and Bama kept getting in our way

with 2019 lsu its two discussions.
its resume and how they were playing at the end of the season.
in the cfp nobody in the history of cfb is beating that team. the defense was on fire and the offense was literally unable to be stopped for more than two drives in a row.
now during the beginning of the year and the resume shows games when we werent playing great on defense.
if someone said, after the national championship game against clemson , lsu has to play whatever team the public picks . if that happens lsu is beating that team by 14 points absolute minimum

I'm not trying to be an a-hole about things. But with the topic being "greatest CFP team of all time"... you have to look at the low points too. There are a lot of undefeated national champions, some of who beat the ever-living shite out of their bowl or champion game opponents. Some who had enormous amounts of future NFL talent on their roster, if that's something you want to hang your hat on.
2019 LSU has a few things in their favor; probably the greatest offense ever. Burrow was doing things you can't match on a Playstation game, and he was doing it in real life. And if you don't pay attention to the running game, ask Bama what Clyde can do, or ask Arkansas (188 yds on 6 carries, really?). It was just obscene.
I would pick 2019 LSU to beat any college team ever, head-to-head. Because if they had to, they would score 50.
But the problem with calling them the best ever, is that defense just slacked off too much. Way too much talent to excuse that.

2019 LSU's defensive struggles are WAY overblown on this board because of one or two bad performances.
I'm sorry, my guy, but if you're trying to go for "best team of all time" you don't get to excuse bad performances. You are what your record says you are, and 2019 LSU's record says they were an elite offensive team coupled with an average (at best) defense.
Or, and this is also what the record says, they coasted through an unrelenting season with the best offense ever assembled while struggling with defensive injuries.
When they finished the season fully healthy, they dominated everyone thet played.
They were also a team that faced 7 of the top 50 team offenses in the country. Three of the top 6 offenses in the country. 6 of the top 28 offenses in the country.

You faced an ou team that bullied a weak big 12, everyone who faced them in the playoffs blew them out in the first round. Clem bama lsu. So no that’s not impossible. Then there was Clemson in the natty, while lsu whipped a soft ou team and sat starters before halftime Clemson and osu played a banger of a game. 26 starters from both teams couldnt finish the game from injuries or ejections. Osu was the better team but Clem caught the breaks and Trevor Lawrence(also knocked out the game but would return) had a phenomenal game. But you faced a weak ou and a clempsin that limped into the title.

Hell 2019 bama beats them with a healthy qb. 2001 Miami, would frick 2019 lsu up. But I think 07 uf, 11 bama, 15 bama, 2018 Clemson would all be hell for lsu. 2019 lsu was a great team but other great teams would exploit that defense. Too one sided. 2019 lsu could probably beat anyone as well but it’d have to be a shootout where they got the ball last.
Posted on 8/6/26 at 7:10 am to Tigerpride18
LSU pressed ppl with an extremely talented qb wr connection, granted no one 2019 could handle it but no one in 2019 had ed reed and Shawn Taylor playing safety both all pros. You also had rumph and Buchanon at cornerback career nfl dbs. And vince Wolfork clogging the middle. Beason and Vilma at linebacker. 2001 Miami is nightmare fuel in terms of a roster

bro 2019 bama was lucky they didnt get blown the frick out. they had 3 tds that were flukey as frick. one was a silent quick count with our all American db looking at the sidelines one was a punt return where a face mask completely reversed the flow of the play and then we should have never been in press man with 2 minutes left.
lsu wins that game 7 out of 10 times. no other team could score enough on offense to keep up. we had to kneel on the ball and fall down on purpose to keep from beating clemson by 31

That particular season? Sure.
I've felt that way about other teams in other years as well.
I knew when we played them, we couldn't beat them because we had no offense that year.

Love reading the LSU fans claiming 2011 bama for the sole reason that they beat them on the field. They would never ever claim a team they beat as the best ever.
