Only have met one former SEC football coach, Gary Pinkel - we stayed late at a tailgate after a game, and he stopped and chatted as he was heading from the locker room back to the football offices (prior to the new football / South end zone building). Seemed nice enough, but it was a brief encounter. Of course they won that game, I'm sure he might have been different after a loss.

I have also met basketball coaching legend Norm Stewart (pre-SEC) a few times. Bigger than life personality, doesn't pull any punches, and is an old school Missouri guy. I thought he was great. However, I have an aquaintence who played for Norm - his opinion is much different.

Bear Bryant - never met but an obvious legend. Enlisted and served in WW2 in the Navy rising to the rank of Luietenant Commander

Shug Jordan - A gentlemen and a badass. Served in 4 different theaters in WW2 and was wounded by German shrapnel during the invasion of Utah Beach in WW2. Rose to the rank of Major

I spoke with "Shug " Jordan two times and he was a perfect gentlemen both times and seems really interested in you as we spoke. As other people pointed out he was a decorated WW2 veteran.

Coach Sherrill. Had a few conversations with him over the years. He was candid answering my questions and I appreciated his commitment to State.
Have to mention Coach Majors. He played HS football with my uncle. I phoned him to invite him to a gathering for my father’s 80th birthday. Coach quickly took my number and said he would call me back. 45 minutes later he called me back and profusely apologized for not being able to talk when I called him. He said he was late getting to the airport in Pittsburgh.
He talked to me about knowing my father and uncles, and his time as an assistant coach at State.
If you ever get a chance to read his book, it’s a good one (You can go home again). He talks about football but also a good bit of it is about growing up in Lynchburg and Huntland.

Haven't rubbed elbows with any FB coaches, but did share a few beers with Bob Mathias and Milt Campbell at the '96 Olympics.

Had a beer on the patio pool area of the Hilton San Destin with the old ball coach himself, Steve Spurrier in ‘09 during SEC Spring meetings.
