Once upon a time I did screening interviews. Hiring manager told me to hide any ashtrays and see how the candidate reacted when he/she lit up and realized what was missing. Some would ask if it was ok to smoke and I would answer yes. Others would simply light up.

He made quite a few appearances on the Jack Benny show. Jack always played a character who was obnoxious and very tight with a dollar.
