Mizzou - Tennessee has been a weird series ever since Mizzou joined the SEC. They are even up at 6 wins 6 losses against each other, yet 8 of the 12 games have been blowouts.

Back in the days of the Big 8 conference it was always frustrating to see Oklahoma and Nebraska slaughter a bunch of nobody’s and the only tough game being the one against each other. Most of the Big 12 teams continued this same model, especially Kansas State during their relevant years.

I think he eats Fried Chicken and Ribs too.

Also..now I want both. But looking at what it has done to him I will hold back.

These kinds of stats can be misleading. When judging performance against ranked opponents, end of season ranking should always be used IMO. Otherwise you get situations like LSU getting credit for a Top 5 win last season against Clemson, and most other teams getting zero credit for beating the same Clemson team.

Also, IMO, record at current school should only be used.

Using Final AP rankings, here are those coaches records against ranked opponents at individual SEC school:

Heupel (TN) 7-15
Drink (MIZ) 4-18
Leach (MSU) 2-9
Kiffin (OM) 11-11; (TN) 0-4
Bielema (ARK) 5-20
Elko (A&M) 2-5
Mullen (MSU) 3-35; (UF) 4-10

It's rare for any coach to coach long enough at one stop to the point that they amass playing 30 games against ranked opponents.... but here are the all-time winning percentages of coaches who played at least 30 ranked opponents in their history in the SEC at one school (final rankings used):

.694- Saban, Alabama
.673- Smart, Georgia
.600- Stallings, Alabama
.598- Spurrier, Florida
.568- Bryant, Alabama
.526- Miles, LSU
.500- Neyland, Tennessee
.474- Fulmer, Tennessee
.418- Vaught, Ole Miss
.404- Tuberville, Auburn
.400- Richt, Georgia
.385- Dooley, Georgia
.385- Spurrier, South Carolina
.367- Dye, Auburn
.364- Jordan, Auburn
.325- Malzahn, Auburn
.288- Majors, Tennessee
.273- Nutt, Arkansas
.250- McClendon, LSU
.216- Butts, Georgia
.205- Sherrill, Miss St
.200- Dickey, Florida
.146- Stoops, Kentucky
.133- Brewer, Ole Miss
.079- Mullen, Miss St
.065- Johnson, Vanderbilt

FYI, I think this is the truest measure of how good a coach is... How Mullen got hired away by Florida with a 3-35 record against ranked teams is absolutely amazing.

Howard didn't opt for the portal, Ryan Day ran him off when he made it clear he was looking to replace him the next year. That's a statement about the culture there.

It was McCord, and it's a very silly argument. You played the 3rd string QB who, 2 years later, has still only thrown 36 career passes. That is why you held them to 3 points.

Yep Drinkwitz can't win against the better SEC teams that go 5-3 or better in SEC play that season but has been pretty good at beating teams that are .500 or less in SEC games that season.

I would have almost bet money on this thread being about Lane Kiffin.

He does have a reputation for putting cream in the puff.

right - McCord (Howard replaced him)... But not a silly argument - wouldn't matter who was at QB or who was at receiver the way their line played.

Bobby Bowden.

Dude is on record saying the SEC was too difficult.

True he did say that. Probably one of his biggest regrets was not only saying that but not joining the SEC.

The crazy thing is, for most of his tenure FSU played one of the most difficult schedules in the country.

In the 1990s and 2000s, FSU played a comparable number of ranked opponents as the big SEC schools.

# of Regular Season Ranked Opponents played 1990-2009 (final AP ranking used):

79- Florida
76- Auburn
75- LSU
71- Tennessee
70- Florida State
69- Alabama
68- Georgia

In 1991 (right around the time Bowden made that comment), FSU played the following teams all during the regular season:

#1 Miami
#6 Michigan in Ann Arbor
#7 Florida in Gainesville
#11 Syracuse
#23 BYU in Anaheim, CA

FSU should have just joined the SEC when they had the chance. In all honesty, their schedule wouldn't have really been any more difficult. They were already playing Florida every season (when UF was king of the SEC). They probably should have just dropped their annual game against Miami and joined the SEC.
