It boggles my mind that the powers-that be in college football have screwed up college football this bad.
Every game used to matter. Now it doesn’t.
Conference championship games used to matter. Now, they won’t even happen most likely.
They could have done this playoff while still persevering the importance of both the regular season and conference championship games.
1. Make all the power four conferences expand to the same number of teams, let’s say 20.
2. Make each conference split into four divisions of 5 teams each. So, four conferences, each with four divisions, that’s 16 division champions.
3. Round 1: the 4 in-conference division champs play each other. This round leaves each conference with 2 teams remaining.
4. Round 2: the 2 winners of the division round meet to decide the conference championship. This round will leave each conference with 1 team, the champion of that conference left in the playoff. Yes, to make it to the final four, you have to win your conference championship game.
5. Round 3: The Final Four of Football. The four conference champions meet here. This round decides the two team that will meet in the national championship game.
6.,Round 4:,The two remaining conference champions meet to decide who will hoist the trophy.
Doing it this way would (1) preserve the importance of the regular season, (2) preserve the importance of winning your conference championship game and (3) be fair to everyone. There is no committee doing “eye tests” as though college football is some sort of beauty pageant.
Someone, anyone tell me why this idea would not be far and away better than this shite show they’re shoving down our throats.

How many mediocre 8 win Big Ten/SEC teams can we cram into this baby!

It’s finished. College football is now officially a bastion of soul less, hyper-corporatized mass entertainment.
Yep, everything that was once unique or interesting about college football is dead.
It's now just another generic pro sports league that does things the exact same way as all the others.
What's good for the sport and fans means nothing, it's just about selling the maximum number of TV slots.
It's widgets to them.

I still like the BCS and 4 team playoff better than your idea, but what your proposing is astronomically better than what is essentially just a few things people have already called out, a greedy money grab, something to help coaches keep jobs and get bonuses, and the HRification of CFB which was one of the last bastions largely free from the feminization of our society by turning the playoff into a participation trophy award

What they’ve done is make the concept of conferences pointless. I mean, if you’re not even going to crown a conference champion at the end of the season, what’s the point of even having them?
Posted on 10/15/26 at 1:39 pm to Darth_Vader
True.
What’s the point of any school remaining in a conference? All schools could just decide to go the ND route.

Arkansas still won't get in.

The irony of this happening at the same time that a law is being rammed through congress to “save” college football from the horror of players being paid is rich. Why don’t we pass a law to prevent the CFP from expanding?

You say this….
But for example, I used to be one if the most die hard CFB fans there is. Every fall weekend arranged around Saturday college football and Alabama’s schedule.
Even a die hard like me is really close to not giving a shite and I might check out next season once this happens.
It used to be the greatest sport with the most die hard fans. But greed conquers all and powers that be have told those die hards to frick off. So I might listen and stop giving them the ratings.
