They have a storied past, huge stadium, Knoxville is a pretty nice city nestled right between Nashville, and Charlotte which seems like a recruiting hotbed. Why are they not competing with Bama, Georgia, and LSU for the top spot in the SEC?

They just suck completely and they deserve every bit of it.

Because this region:

between Nashville, and Charlotte which seems like a recruiting hotbed.

Doesn’t produce enough talent to be poached by neighboring “big boys” and still fill out Tennessee’s roster with elite talent.

LSU clapped them in the 2001 SEC Championship game and they haven't recovered since.

In one sentence: A decade of terrible leadership hires at both the AD & subsequently HC positions.

Facilities, fanbase, location, infrastructure is all in place to win big. Not at the level where we are competing for National Championships every year, but the tier below that with the ability to sneak into the championship conversation with the right head coach. Program management has just been fricking awful since Fulmer was fired after the 2008 season.

A revolving door of bad coaching hires.

Texas football is dollar-for-dollar way more embarrassing than Tennessee. Y'all have the most money and can recruit in the top football state, yet you have zero to show for it since the mid-00s.

Yes, Tennessee sucks, but you frickers are one expensive failure.

We are purty good at basketball and now, baseball too. Tennessee can and will be good at football again, just depends on getting the right guy.

There is a culture problem there. They need to find their guy that will completely overhaul the program and start from scratch... bring a little toughness back to their teams if anything. Same for teams like Michigan and... Texas

When Tennessee is good they recruit Atlanta, Virginia, North Carolina, California, and Maryland really well. If Heupel can deliver on his O the recruits will return.

Another aspect that has hurt them is the inability to recruit Oline guys that can contribute. They recruit highly rated guys and they medically retire or can’t stay healthy. That just kills any team building.

Why is Texas not good? Big talent rich state and all that longhorn money. Yet here you are riding the coat tails of Oklahoma to get into the SEC

Well the guy you’ve got coaching your OL now will turn your scraps into the cream of the crop. He is elite.

ETA: But he’s too loyal to Heupel.

Texas is better than you think they are.. but no, they still need to get better. Check out the Sagarin thread as I updated for new teams.
