It's not a hotbed, but Nashville metro, and now the Chattanooga metro are continually growing and middle and east TN are producing more and more SEC level talent. What Tennessee's issue is, that they've not gotten enough of these players outside the 2014 and 2015 classes.
This...Where have the top 10 players from each class gone?
2016 - 3 of the top 10 players in the state (4, 7 & 9) signed with UT
2017 - 3 of the top 10 players (1, 5 & 8) signed with UT
2018 - 2 of the top 10 players (3 & 9) signed with UT
2019 - 3 of the top 10 (2, 7 & 9) signed with UT
2020 - 5 of the top 10 (1,2,4,7,8) signed with UT
2021 - 1 of the top 10 (8) signed with UT
UT can't dip into North and South Carolina like the could when Fulmer was there...so they have to at least pick up the most talent than can in their own back yard. If they can't get half of the top 10 at least every other year...then it's a pretty good indication that their system is broken.

The question is more "why were they ever good post-segregation?" They had a couple of really good coaches. If your school is surrounded by yellow, being consistently good is an uphill battle.

Dont care as Sympathy is irrelevant to my point. Instead, it’s all about logic and understanding of how football works.

Terrible management.
And coaching. That’s really all there is to it. We have had the talent to be far better.

Exactly, we've recruited well enough to be clear of the rest of the division bar maybe South Carolina, but we have had some terrible coaching staffs and have way underperformed as a result. People are really out here acting like our recruiting is why we been losing to Kentucky and Vanderbilt and fricking Georgia State.

I think it comes up repeatedly because fans are used to their own schools’ recruiting methods and they fail to grasp that we’ve had several top classes during all this. We have simply had really bad coaching.

In one sentence: A decade of terrible leadership hires at both the AD & subsequently HC positions
Not a good enough excuse. LSU had Joe Alleva, les miles and coach O and they have thrived while having these miserable coaches and AD.
It all comes down to recruiting. You can overcome miserable hires when you bring in top 5 classes.

You are vastly underestimating how poorly run Tennessee has been. Miles and O are both leagues better than Dooley, Jones, and Pruitt, and don't even get me started on how bad the ADs have been.

You lost 5 players from a team loaded with 5 stars. Cry me a river.

Tennessee is the SEC's version of Nebraska.
A storied past but not a destination for top players today.

Exactly...Kind of like what LSU was in the 90s.

We're completely different.
We have all the university resources and recruiting base, we're just fricken it up.

You have the worst "recruiting base" of all the big 6 in the SEC.

Nebraska's downfall is a totally different story. Steve Pederson destroyed Nebraska football by changing their identity.
As it has been said before, UTAD comes down to flat out incompetence.
