If you think extending DeBoer is a good idea, you’re a dumbass.

Other teams including Michigan were trying to hire him away from us.

Our options were extend him or get a new coach.

So given that I didn’t want to find a new coach and think he’s one of the best coaches in CFB (as do many other elite programs apparently), I am happy we extended him given the circumstances.

Would you rather be Michigan and hiring Kyle Wittingham to a long term deal instead? Because that’s what they had to do when we agreed to extend CKD.

Never liked the hire. Our players have turned into pussies. I'm not happy about that.

CKD is a solid coach who has done a decent job but he was only two years into his original contract. This just seems premature and unnecessary. Byrne has pushed all his chips in with CKD and their fates are now directly tied together.

This is true. I like CKD but it's still to be seen if he's up to the job. I feel like Byrne is like a poker player who has (what he thinks) is a good hand and raises all in with EVERYTHING. This move is a huge gamble. It could pay off or the entire program may crash and burn and take both Byrne and CKD with it.

I felt like if 2026 is like last year, CKD's coaching seat would be molten magma hot in 2027. Now, who knows? I hope it works out but you just don't know.

So you’re here complaining about keeping him without explaining:
A) who you would’ve hired that we could get that none of the other elite teams could
B) why they would be better after we just made the playoffs and beat our rivals
C) how that would make us better when allowing him to leave would’ve resulted in our roster being gutted via the portal for the second time in a few years

We have stacked QB talent and are about to bring in yet another 5*.

We’re rebuilding the OL that fell to pieces late under BOB.

The defense is starting to stack depth and talent after being thin across the front 7.

We have the best secondary in the country.

What exactly are you complaining about? Saban is gone and we dont have billionaires, settle down.

Deboer is the best we could hire given the limits of the coaching search. Football is the only position Byrne is restrained when it comes to hiring due to expectations, etc.

competitive balance in the work force. Meaning he is a highly desirable commodity and as such he needs to be paid along with his peers as a top 10 coach.

Half of CFB was desperate to land Lane Kiffin who has never won a single conference championship, had never made it to Atlanta, had left on bad terms everywhere he’s ever and is already chasing 18YO undergrads around Baton Rouge.

Saban and Harbaugh are gone, outside of Kirby and now probably Cignetti who is old and wasn’t at all a proven commodity until the end of last year who are all these coaches people are jealous of?

Heck OSU wanted Day fired until he snuck into the CFP on the hot seat and won a championship.

CKD has a better resume than almost anyone in CFB and we’re damn lucky to have him IMO. We had zero business being in the playoffs last year after the injuries based on what we had left and he got us there and won a game on the road.

Hiring Deboer is like buying Amazon stock in 2018. The p/e ratio is high as hell with no margin of Safety but if you're a blue chip snob then what can you expect? I was touting Jim Leonhard and later Vince Kehres for a reason.

I generally agree with your point of view but I think this extension is going to age like milk in the sun if we perform poorly in 2026. The idea I saw someone float in this topic that the extension is meant to act like hostage taking of the boosters and general fan base if 2026 is a lackluster rebuild year is insidious if true.

Who cares about the general public fanbase. If you think the donors of consequence are going to take kindly to hostage taking from Byrne, you got a surprise coming to you.

This is probably more about squelching the asinine "Hot Seat" talk by the media and fans going into the season. I have zero issue with it. They buyout has dropped dramatically......10 million, as opposed to what 60 million last year? Not a bad deal for both sides. It also keeps others from negative recruiting against us. At the end of the day the man did what all the "experts" on the message boards said he had to do last year.....make the playoff. He even won a playoff game. The landscape has forever changed.....back away from the ledge.

If we were to make a coaching change, our next hire would almost certainly have a leaner resume than CKD had when he was hired just off a national championship appearance. Names like Cignetti and Lanning are delusional. Our next hire would likely be an unproven non p4 guy or an assistant. For this reason, we should all be hoping CKD works out. I just wish we hadn’t made a move that guarantees we’re financially screwed if he doesn’t.

Again I think you are misunderstanding the buyout because a lot of the sports media is AI now and not dotting all the I’s and crossing all the T’s. The cheap buyout is what he owes us if he leaves voluntarily. If we fire him he’s owed 90% of the balance of the contract and if he gets another job we still have to pay him. If we try to fire him after 2026 we owe him $67.5 million.

The lack of a mitigation clause is the worst part. I can’t think of a good explanation for this. It’s inexplicable.

Yeah that’s nonsensical. That’s not protecting the university’s interests.

Absolutely correct. There's a reason why ou hires assistant coaches.

The whole program is doomed to age like milk if we continue to indulge fans who want to hold everyone to the peak Saban era standard.

There’s only ever been one Saban and even he wasn’t peak Saban anymore by 2022 so we need to build on the foundation he established while accepting that expecting a championship every other year in an era of billionaire NIL and program parity isn’t going to happen.

Winning 9-11 games, competing within the conference with teams who are our peers and being in a NC tier every couple years or so has to be the realistic expection or we’re quickly headed to turmoil and churn instead of roster stability and culture building.

And again, we need to look at the extension within the context in which it was made: other schools were going to hire him.

If we don’t extend him he’s gone and we’re rebuilding our roster and going after coaches who had already turned down Michigan and places like UF and AU are hiring guys from USF with mediocre resumes.

It’s like you’re dating a girl who you like but aren’t 100% sure where things are but some other guy at her work who’s roughly as appealing as you are and who desperately wants her so you either have to commit or let her walk.

Letting him walk given the circumstances would’ve been a colossal mistake and now the boosters will have to get onboard instead of backbiting because he isn’t going anywhere for awhile.

He doesn’t know who he’d hire, doesn’t understand CFB in an era of parity and apparently hasn’t realized Saban is retired.

It’s Finebaum level commentary.
