This is about as massive an expression of faith as you can give someone. Byrne has a pair, I just hope they don’t get squashed.

I’m backing off my pledge not to engage you in conversation again, as Bama fans we should be able to disagree without being disagreeable.

I’m simply stating fact. People saw the $10 million figure and jumped to conclusions. That is only what he owes us if he decides to leave.

If we fire him, we owe him 90% of the balance of the contract, with no reduction if he gets another job. He’d still be getting a check from us in that other job.

Honestly, I would have extended him but not seven years and I wouldn’t have given him that kind of buyout if we fire him.

There is an argument that 9-3 and 10-2 is what we need to be expecting in the modern SEC and no GOAT.

However, I am 100% certain if we stack 3 more seasons like the first 2 that not only with the general fanbase be turning on him but the big money is going to be super pissed that Byrne has got them over the barrel in a situation where they're pissing money away either keeping or firing him.

Until it gets deep into the contract the buyout to fire him would be devastating financially to the program, taking resources we would direly need elsewhere.

There’s a big difference between 10-2 and 9-3 where you’re competing with people and playing for the big trophy, and 10-2 and 9-3 when you’re s*itting the bed when it’s least expected.

If any millionaires get mad about Kalen DeBoer wasting their money in a year or two, I humbly recommend that they give that money to Nathanael Oats instead. He won't waste it.

Getting to a 12 team playoff ain't that big a deal really.

You apparently still think we're living in the Saban/Pre-NIL era.

We arent.

If you think its championship or bust you are in for decades of disapointment.

Deboer is not up to Bama standards for me and needs to go. If admin has any sense, they'll get rid of him first chance they get.

Admin just extended and raised him essentially hitching their wagon to him. If he goes Byrne is likely out on his arse too.

Playoff coach...beat most of our "rivals" the past 2 years...top 5 recruiting class.

Yeah, the money is ridiculous everywhere...but Saban era expectations from the greatest dynasty in the history of the sport...People need to realize that's over. Nothing like that can be sustained forever...even if Saban was still HC.

What we have is a playoff caliber program that can compete for championships...not win one every other year.

If you think extending DeBoer is a good idea, you’re a dumbass.

Again, I would have extended DeBoer … maybe another three years … but not seven and I wouldn’t have given him the 90% buyout if we fire him without cause. That’s too one-sided in his favor.

I also edited one of my posts where I poked at you a little.

That’s only what he owes if he leaves of his own volition. If we fire him without cause we owe him large. 90% of his remaining contract with no reduction if he gets other employment.

Where are y'all seeing this? I don't see that in any articles.

We’ll be sure to the the Athletic Department know. They’ll probably rip up this extension and fire him immediately. Everyone just wishes you’d said something sooner and we could’ve avoided all this.

There’s only been one decision that I completely disagreed with Greg on when it happened, and that was when he hired Brad Bohannon from AU.

I’m not quite as negative about this one, but it still feels off. Some of DeBoer’s weaknesses are pretty glaring to be paying this much over that many years, and the no offset clause is just terrible negotiating.

Part of me thinks he did this because he and DeBoer both know this is going to be a rebuilding year that may cause fans to get irrationally angry, and that would have gotten toxic with a bunch of “Fire DeBoer” talk. Now a lot of that anger will be directed at Greg and while people might be angry, the media won’t latch on to a hot seat narrative given this extension. DeBoer essentially has cover for a bit of setback this year as long as he rebounds next year. I just hope Greg is right about DeBoer’s long term viability…because while I know he can do well with extra prep time, he doesn’t seem to handle short turnarounds against good teams well (and at least 2 playoff games will have less than 2 weeks of prep if you want to win a NC).

P.S. the 7yrs wasn’t actually that much longer than what was left on his current contract. Think he had 5-6 yrs left, so even redoing the contract with no extension would have been around 6 years. Can’t do a 3yr extension on a contract that is already 5+ years long.

I’m flabbergasted by this, wtf is Byrne doing?? We had DeBoer signed for what, 8 years? Idk I haven’t looked

Whatever the length, what’s the reason for the extension?

He hasn’t lived up to the Bama standard, regardless of Saban, we don’t get blown out 38-3 except for a retarded period of Mike Dubose.

I am lukewarm on DeBoer, I think he’s a good coach but to lose in the ways he’s lost and then extend him is bewildering. We haven’t won shite

Win the SECCG against Georgia? Ok maybe there’s a reason to extend him. But we looked like an FCS team. Then again against Indiana.

This is truly retarded in my opinion.

I am not a DeBoer hater, he just hasn’t won at the expected level to garner this extension
