Five words, “THIS WILL RUIN COLLEGE FOOTBALL!”

A guy that has never paid is getting almost seven figures for “his” name image and likeness? I’m sure it has nothing to do with the uniform he wears. College sports had an excellent run.

I'm just waiting for the inevitable implosion of so many promising, young players. This will ruin careers before they can even begin. Hundreds of thousands will be thrown at 18-YO 5-stars who have yet to play a down. If I had a million bucks in the bank and attractive coeds flinging themselves at me in the bars every single night, I know my immature teenage arse wouldn't have given two shits about paying attention in film study (or class, for that matter). Geez, imagine Johnny Manziel had this NIL shite existed back in 2012. He probably wouldn't have even gotten drafted, let alone in the 1st round.

If you’re assumptions are correct then this will more clearly reveal the degree of character strength of the top players in college before they become draft eligible. It could “weed” out the weak ones before they get to the NFL

Define “almost seven figures”. I could argue that five figures is “almost seven figures”, in a manner of speaking.

So were there any rules put around this or just opened the flood gates?

Great! I'm all for it. A four year degree is overrated and this notion be lucky we offered you a scholarship can go some where also. you won't let them work for the same excuses and expect them to be content with an opportunity to attend "insert School here". If they can go to the military and risk death at an early age for this country, then they can get paid for their likeness. I'll go in the other direction with it. If they get certified as an adult for committing a heinous crime, then they can get paid for their likeness.Last for you hardcore crime schmucks on here. If you can give them life in prison or worse the the death penalty then you no damn reason worrying about what the hell they do with their likeness because it is their choice. That is what the judge is going to say when he lays the smack down on them, " You made the choice to "Insert awful crime" and now you have to live with it". So please people get over it. It is here to stay

Honestly, I never saw this coming. I've said for many years that allowing them to leave early would hurt the "college brand".

This is why Gilbert left. He wanted a bigger media market. I think there will still be payoffs, kind of a de facto "signing bonus" because some of the names won't be big enough coming out of HS, but will develop. CFB is screwed, but I guess New York will finally have a CFB team worth a shite. Hell, they could set one up at NYU this year and win a title w/in 3 years.

for those blaming Saban... he tried to warn the ncaa not to go down this road.

Total BS, he's always been on board with paying players, and now he can tell the REC to put the cash in his pocket.

This is Saban's new recruiting tactic and at the same time will likely kill college football. Eventually Saban retires and the game is ruined. He's a bastard of epic proportions, always wants to go out on top, damn you Mal.

They will pay them so much they will quit playing in college games to save themselves for the draft.

Rosters full of replacements of 2nd & 3rd stringers, of course then no one buys tickets so bye bye to college football.

Maybe in their last year, but they’ll want to ball out their first two years to keep securing better NIL deals.

I wonder how this will effect future capital campaigns by teams. If a guy is funneling $500k a year to the 5 stars coach wants then does he throw another $500K a year at facilities? Or will facilities decrease in importance as paydays become all that matter.
user avatar
CDawson34 months
Facilities will take the hit. If schools have to start sharing money with players and shift it elsewhere I don't think the facility arms race can continue.

Imagine what a guy like Tim Tebow could make in todays college game. probably more than he made in the pros.

Imagine how much money Tim Tebow *DID* make Florida and the NCAA just in jersey sales alone.
