Sort of. The entire post 9/11 effort was complete bullshite with the benefit of hindsight. The way politicians muzzled the attack dogs meant it would all be for nothing. Early on, things were great we were moving fast and rolling up tons of bad guys. By the end, you had to confirm you were being shot at accurately enough to endanger yourself, it could just be gunfire in your direction. The ROE turned into complete dogshit.

Re-enactment. There is still 4 mounted units (5th SFG aside) but they are all ceremonial.


The 5th group fought mounted in Afghanistan in the war made famous by the movie 12 Strong. I’ve met one of them because our sons serve together. He has no prior horseback knowledge but learned quick.

It was certainly a pivotal moment.

I am about to take a 17 day trip to Glacier, Yellowstone, and Germans Tetons national parks with my 18 year old daughter.

I have the means to do so after growing up extremely poor is a great reminder that this country is amazing. I don’t know if a poster kid growing up on government cheese in any other country couldn’t where I am today while staying in their country.
