Why do some keep claiming that college football is dead?

I keep seeing people post that it is dying, that it is all but over, but that's simply not true.
Not only are TV ratings at all-time highs, but attendance has also grown pretty much across the board year over year.
So, why do people keep claiming this?

Because some people are Arkansas fans.

Tv ratings are hard to compare as they do not calculate ratings today like they did in the past. As far as attendance we just saw our first consecutive years of rising attendances since the 2008 season. Not exactly screaming a huge climb consistently to me. I think people just say it because of the feel and their overall preference that they do not feel anymore. Once the feeling became more individual based and less about the school or the state pride people got turned off. Doesn’t mean they won’t watch and their are still many passionate out there.

After TWA 800 exploded, the plane still rose a thousand feet.

Idk about college football as a whole, but as a Florida fan…

I watch just as much as I always have and I am keeping up with my team more than I ever have before.

The more they try to become NFL-Lite the less interested I am. I think LSU is about to go on a nice run so that's keeping me engaged for the moment but this is not the game I've loved for 50 years. The abandonment of New Year's Day was a bigger blow than most acknowledge.

What it was 30 years ago is dead. What it is now isn't sustainable if TV money dries up.

A poor farmer had a small farm and a single donkey. The donkey was his most valuable resource but also his biggest expense. He spent a lot of money on feed for it.
One day he has a bright idea. He began mixing in a bit of sawdust with the donkey's feed. The donkey didn't seem to mind, ate it all the same. The farmer was thrilled, he cut his feed expenses by 15% in one fell swoop and was now finally making a little bit of money.
A few weeks later he mixed even in more sawdust, as before the donkey didn't seem not notice or mind, ate it all the same, the farmer made ven more money.
Every few weeks the amount of sawdust increased, and every week the farmer's profits climbed higher and higher.
One morning, the farmer, very proud of himself and his economic brilliance, went out to start the day and found the donkey dead on the barn floor.

Maybe 5 years ago and earlier there was not a Saturday I didn't plan the day around football. Now that it has become mercenary ball I make sure all of my stands are up, the plots are full, and if dove hunting...the birds are flying. College football has lost its way. I'm 47 so I will go outside and yell at the next cloud now.

There's already a pro league I have abandoned. Unless some changes are made, it won't be long before CFB is in my rearview mirror.
And I am excited to see what LSU does under Lane. The only thing that differs some for me is Lane knows how to portal.
I feel players deserve pay, I just do not like the heavy turnover and the loyalty to the money and not the school. Time will tell me how this all plays out.

Most streamed songs on spotify this year:
"Blinding Lights" – The Weeknd (5.47 billion)
"Shape of You" – Ed Sheeran (4.98 billion)
"Sweater Weather" – The Neighbourhood (4.70 billion)
Just because a lot of people like something doesn't automatically make it good. Millions of people will watch CFB for as long as CFB exists; that can be true while also admitting that the quality of the product is getting more dogshit by the year.

I don't know about it being dead but it certainly has been changing. I don't like the direction it has gone and all it is teaching these young men is to go after the money. There is very little loyalty anymore amongst football players. To me the biggest problems are the changes made to the transfer portal since covid and the introduction of NIL.
I don't enjoy watching it near as much as I used to. I hardly watch NFL football anymore.

Meh it’s a different world than we grew up with. However, everyone blames it on: “the kids changed”.
bullshite. The adults changed.

Seriously, many players make as much or more than their position coach

I care about my team still. And really just because it’s my Alma mater. But I don’t care for college football as a whole like I once did. Mostly due to realignment but portal is right behind it. I don’t like NIL but I understand it considering all the money in college athletics.

Bingo. Greed. NIL could have existed 25 years ago in a better format. The game as it was could have been preserved.
Throw all the changes together at once, on top of the greed, and it’s just chaos for the hardcore fan. I’m sure casual fans enjoy it.

It has nothing to do with current fan-support. It was never gonna drop off a cliff for that.
The point is that the entire sport has utterly mutated from the spirit of the game we all knew.
Now it is just the mini-NFL. It's too late to go back, also. We just have to learn to accept it for what it is, now.

I don’t know if the sport that is today called College Football will die. It might thrive for all I know, although I doubt it.
If you’re talking about what used to be called College Football, it’s definitely dead.
Like Lynyrd Skynyrd. You can stay it’s still an active band and be correct. In a truer sense, the band died in ‘77
FWIW, NIL is a big part of it but there’s much more to it than that. The core of what made it unique is completely gone
