For these teams, it was playoff or bust. If you are in comfortably, you met expectations. If you are also competing for the bye, you exceeded.

Alabama Crimson Tide - Kalen DeBoer - Under (just slightly under since a bubble team)
Georgia Bulldogs - Kirby Smart - Met expectations (contradicts my definition above but UGa fans expected to be in Atl playing for bye)
LSU Tigers - Brian Kelly - Under
Ole Miss Rebels - Lane Kiffin - Under
Tennessee Volunteers - Josh Heupel - Met expectations
Texas Longhorns - Steve Sarkisian - Exceeded

Can you show me where there were preseason expectations for Tennessee to make the playoffs with a Freshman QB out there? The VAST majority of talking heads did not have Tennessee in the mix.

Every Tennessee fan I know had the Vols in playoff contention. They liked what they saw from Niko in the bowl game and knew the D would be good/great. Not sure what the analysts were saying.

Did a quick google and On3 had UT in and ESPN had them on the bubble so I'd say at least a few of the experts had UT in.

On3 - UT 11 seed

ESPN - UT first 4 out

I think Vanderbilt far exceeded.

Should be coach of the year imho.

A little more than slightly.

We should have won 10 games, and no excuse for not winning 9.

What's going to be interesting, is how you view the coaches of others schools.

For example- I'm an LSU fan. I thought DeBoer would struggle year 1 at Alabama, and not slide into an 11-1 season. I also thought that despite Ole Miss being ranked so high, they'd lose at LSU and another game or so. They met MY expectations, but their bases would say under-performed.

Alabama Crimson Tide - Kalen DeBoer - Met
Arkansas Razorbacks - Sam Pittman - Met
Auburn Tigers - Hugh Freeze - Under
Florida Gators - Billy Napier - Exceeded
Georgia Bulldogs - Kirby Smart - Under
Kentucky Wildcats - Mark Stoops - Under
LSU Tigers - Brian Kelly - Slightly Under
Mississippi State Bulldogs - Jeff Lebby - Under
Missouri Tigers - Eli Drinkwitz - Met
Ole Miss Rebels - Lane Kiffin - Met
Oklahoma Sooners - Brent Venables - Met
South Carolina Gamecocks - Shane Beamer - Exceeded
Tennessee Volunteers - Josh Heupel - Met
Texas A&M Aggies - Mike Elko - Exceeded
Texas Longhorns - Steve Sarkisian - Met
Vanderbilt Commodores - Clark Lea - Exceeded

Kelly @ LSU- I thought 9-3, difference being the game @ Florida. 10-2 if they beat USC, which I considered a tossup.
But I also thought Napier would be out or lame duck by that LSU-Fla game, and instead Napier had turned the corner.
I expected the loss to Alabama, and figured @ A&M was a probable loss.

Ok...just curious, because the majority of the posters on here with the preseason prediction had them at 9-3 or 8-4.

So if a few analysts had them in, but the majority did not...that is exceeding expectations for the majority of them...right?

Mississippi State under but what I expected
Ole Miss under what everyone expected

USCe over what everyone expected
Tennessee met expectations

It could be argued that any team that was within a half game of their expected win total met expectations.

I didn't list everyone because I didn't know the expectations of every team.

Bama- Most Bama fans expected 9-3/10-2 record, the only "surprise" was the teams we lost to and the teams we beat. The teams we beat such as UGA and LSU we thought that would be the games we'd lose. But we ended up winning. The losses to Vandy and OU were the ones we didn't anticipate. But overall the final record is about where most figured we'd land.

Auburn- I'm utterly shocked at how bad Freeze is doing. I just knew once they hired him and Saban retired they were going to be one of the "up and comers" of the SEC. But he's really soiled his pants.

LSU- I never saw them losing four games this season. It looked like he lost control of the program in the back part of the season.

Texas-They did what I figured they'd do. They entered the SEC at the perfect time. Sark has SEC talent all over that team and they got a pillow soft schedule for their first SEC season. So, they did exactly what I thought they'd do.

USCe/Vandy- Both of these programs far exceeded what I expected. Beamer will probably get a big contract extension and the Vandy coach will now have much bigger coaching opportunities.

Ole Miss- This was their year so even though they won nine games they fell short of the hype. So they underachieved. Lane just can't shake the stigma of losing games he's not suppose to lose. He does it literally every year.

Napier turned it around, went from underperforming to exceeding expectations. Hopefully it will continue.

Yet they'll still get rewarded with a playoff spot, this Bama bias special treatment is borderline criminal, whoever gets them first round please knock their asses out and end this travesty so the real great teams can duke it out for no. 1

What did you expect?

I'm an LSU fan. Looking at the schedule in the preseason, I figured 10-2 to 8-4.

I expected the loss to Alabama. *correct*

I thought the opener against USC was a tossup; I think LSU is better, but starts slow every year. I also thought Lincoln Riley needed that game more than Kelly did, so he probably schemed more, while Kelly prepared more for the overall season.
*tossup- LSU lost close game*

I thought our second most likely loss would be @ A&M, as that seems to be the way the series is shaping up. They get up for LSU there, LSU beats them in Tiger Stadium. *correct*

I thought we'd beat South Carolina, Vandy, and Arkansas. *correct*

I thought we'd beat Ole Miss, because it was a home game *correct*

I thought we'd beat Florida on the road, because Napier would be dead man walking. *WRONG*

I thought we'd beat Oklahoma at home to close the season *correct*

so in my estimation, we're slightly under. We lost the tossup, which doesn't really go either way. The only MISS was Florida, which we'd all figured would be toast that late in the season.

I’d say Napier, Lea, and Beamer were the only ones that really exceeded expectations.

Heupel is the only one that probably slightly exceeded.

Elko is the only one that met (Texas8&4). Could probably list Texas/Sarkisian here with their schedule.

Drink, Smart, DeBoer, Pittman, Venables, Kiffin slightly under…

And then Freeze, Lebby, Stoops, and maybe Kelly in the Under.

If you are relying on sentiment from posters on this site, can't help you. I don't really pay attention to the rankings and expectations that are posted here. I can tell you that I live in North Alabama around a lot of UT fans and the vast majority said it would be a failure if Heupel didn't make the playoffs in year 4.

I linked the first two articles that came up when I googled "college playoff preseason expectations". I do not know the breakdown between how many thought UT would be in or on the bubble vs how many thought they had no shot. Given that the first two I clicked thought they would be in, logic would tell me the ones who didn't think they would make it were not in the vast majority. The only sports talk I listen to is out of Bham (The Next Round) and they also said it was playoffs or bust for UT, for whatever that is worth.

Not sure why Heupel meeting expectations is something you are so adamant didn't happen??

Sark has met or exceeded expectations IMO.

Texas is an exceedingly difficult place to coach, with our high expectations, opinionated and impatient fanbase, and rich alums who like to interfere…

All of my Longhorn friends and family are having a good time this year. No small task after wandering 11+ years in the wilderness…

Meh. Don't think it's even possible to underform in the situation he walked into, especially with Shapen getting injured.
