Making the playoff is what defines success in this sport for head coaches
Back when the playoff started, it began devaluing NY6 bowls since only 4 teams got in, many a coach were fired or retired under that new landscape, most notably Les Miles - LSU was making bowl games and churning out NFL draft picks but they fired him because the litmus test of success as a big-time college head coach had changed
The point is the coaches want this for necessity when it comes to their job security

That said, if the revenue received by players and stars is not commensurate and proportionate to overall league revenue per the CBA compared to other sports and their respective CBAs, then they will definitely need to address that the next time the CBA expires
