Oxford has something no other SEC school can fathom. It is a southern cultural Mecca: music, literature and tradition.

I went out with a girl from Laurel in 1982. Picked her up for a weekend game in Jackson. Ole Miss was playing Alabama. I think she had five suitcases.
But the best one was the girl from Clarksdale. They had a thing called Shrimp and Beer in those days at Sardis. All she had was a pair of cutoff jean shorts and a liver with no limits. We lived in bed and at The Gin.
The team sucked in those days and Oxford was very different from today.

Only been once for a football game. Do they still have that odd law where they can't sell their beer cold? Stopped on the way into town to fill the ice chests and go tailgate. Couldn't find the beer fridge at the convenience store. Found out they couldn't sell the beer cold.

While the Grove can be a little overrated (although still fun), Oxford is not.
Probably top-2 best SEC towns along with Athens. The Square is a great time and agree that it's much more fun on non-game day weekends when everything isn't so packed and the covers aren't insane. Boure and City Grocery are two of my favorite spots and the Library is an SEC bar staple (along with Sky Bar, Fred's, etc.).
It is really small though and not close to anything so I think I'd personally get bored of it after a couple of years, but it's a great college town overall.

Ive been saying the same thing about Ruston for years now, I do think they've came a long way from three bars when i was there

The University has outgrown the town. We're constantly seeing larger and larger incoming freshmen classes, and the roads here just aren't setup to handle the additional population the University brings in. It also doesn't help that Mississippi had gotten rid of the driving test to get a driver's license (although, they're reimplementing that) and these kids seem to not understand the concept that you have to yield to merge onto highways.
If you look over at Ed Perry going to Sisk, they're throwing up a huge number of apartment buildings to addressing the housing issue with these students.
A new grocery store is still in the plans (Sullivans) off of Hwy 30 over there near the three back-to-back round-a-bouts, and that'll help alleviate some of the traffic that congests Jackson and University.
I think at some point, the University is gonna have to either cap the enrollment numbers, or the city/county/state will have to really looking at making big changes to the roads around here.
Having said that, I love living here and especially dig it when the students are on break.

I think Oxford, Athens, and Fayetteville are my top 3 SEC towns.

Winter break Oxford and summer break Oxford are magical places. Winter break especially was always my favorite.

I lived there as a 25 year old. Enjoyed it. Especially when the students were out of school and it didn’t take 30 minutes to drive through the square

Lived there from 2015-23. Best town in the state. I hate UM, but love Oxford. I would definitely move back.

It’s just like the rest of these nicer, small MS towns. If you weren’t born on third base, you have to branch out to make a living. A lot of old money there.
