re: Question on Holtz for Arkansas fans

if Jimmy Johnson had gotten the Arkansas job in 1977
Johnson was barely over .500 (29-25) in four seasons at Okie State in a league that was similar to the SWC. At that time, OU and Nebraska controlled the Big 8 while Texas (before Pony Excess) ruled the SWC. His Big 8 record was under .500 and he somehow kept a functionally illiterate Dexter Manley academically eligible. He had success at Miami because he was able to get Florida recruits (Michael Irvin, Jerome Brown, Benny Blades, etc) who would have never played in Fayetteville.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Jimmy was in the picture when Holtz was hired. Wasn't Jimmy at OK St when Holtz left, and he was a finalist to replace Holtz? As I recall, he found out that JFB had already privately offered Kenny Hatfield because he was squeaky clean, and he gave Jimmy a "courtesy" interview at Herman's Rib House.
quote:
The lack of recruiting in state talent and comments did not endear him to the state.
What sealed the deal, however, was campaigning for Jesse Helms. It wasn't just Helms leading the fight against MLK Jr. day, though I am hard pressed to think of something back then that would have driven away young Black athletes faster than that. Rather it was that Holtz doing such an action heavily implied that the University of Arkansas was endorsing Helms.
People have a hard time remembering just how much raw political power Broyles effectively wielded in Arkansas back then. Bill Clinton called Broyles the most powerful man in the state for a reason. Broyles, and before him Barnhill, had built a system based one state, one football team.
You didn't comment on political issues because it might offend a group in state, you took your smiling pictures with the Governor, and that was that. To make matters worse, Helms was a devoted Republican. As hard as it is to believe now back then the Republican party in Arkansas was so small it was joked they had their state convention at a corner booth in Denny's. Democrats controlled everything, and I do mean everything.
Holtz didn't just touch the third rail of Arkansas politics, he took a giant whiz on it.
Nailed it
All of that is entirely true and a very good contextual account.
But to simplify it a bit, Holtz went on the Johnny Carson show and made the statement, "Fayetteville Arkansas is not the end of the world, but you can sure see it from there." My late father had 2 degrees from Arkansas and was a loyal Hog fan and Lou Holtz fan. When that comment came out of his mouth, my dad had no use for that lisping midget ever again. He insulted my father's home state and his alma mater. Dad was glad to see him go.

honest question, does the Reynolds family have a say in any of this or are they compensated in any way? Seems kinda shitty that you'd have a dude's name on the stadium and have a generation of people know it by that name and then jsut scrape him off for the highest bidder.
The Donald W Reynolds Foundation out of Tulsa spent down its cash and dissolved many years ago. The gift to name the U of A stadium was one of those gifts designed to help spend down their capital. They've also supported a number of other capital projects throughout Arkansas, including the inpatient hospice facility for Arkansas Hospice in Russellville and the Center on Aging on the UAMS campus. I know of several other capital projects across Arkansas (and probably OK as well) that they supported. Their tie was not particularly tight with the UA or the Hogs. That was just some good work by UA and Razorback Foundation Development Officers back in the Day.

The deal is $5.4 Million per year over 13 years. CA is looking to expand their footprint beyond the KC area. They've already got 6 locations in NWA. Clearly they saw value in aligning their Marketing with the U of A. Incidentally, that alignment and brand awareness is already enjoyed by all the Fortune 500 companies in NWA, so such an annual expenditure made no business sense.
Living in the KC area, I see their ads with Bobby Witt JR and the chiefs qb running regularly on local stations. They also sponsor the Diamond Club at the K. They seem to be a really good corporate sponsor/partner.
We're not familiar with them yet in NWA, but from the size of this investment, we are likely to become very familiar with them. I'm good with this partnership. Let's see how it activates...

Sucks he got stuck in Sacramento.
Many a careers have died there.
Bad franchise in a small market on the West Coast. What this tells me is that I'll have very few opportunities to see his games on tv. Unless I pay for the NBA League Pass (I won't), then he might as well be playing in Lithuania. He could be the next Kyrie Irving, but we'll never know. Sacramento is an NBA Black Hole.

#2 Arkansas lost 112 to 105 to #1 UNLV in Fayetteville. The most exciting game I've ever been to. I was 15. It was in the old Barnhill Arena and it was loud af.
I was there. Second row of the student section. Got to meet Walter Payton and he signed my student ticket. The hype for that game was nuts. We led at halftime, but LJ and Stacey Augmon were beasts and controlled the second half.

RPI puts too much meaning on meaningless midweek games. The midweek games are for getting lower end bullpen arms some reps. Unless the NCAA comes up with a different metric, teams are going to start scheduling fewer midweek games to combat this.
Clearly there's a way to "game" the RPI formula, and Arkansas has not taken advantage of it. I'd definitely look at scheduling differently in the future with the intent of manipulating RPI.

you’re not outnumbering the home fans
We won't outnumber them if we play kansas head to head. The locals and season ticket holders will have first dibs on tickets, and will grab them up. Hog-Land park is a miniscule place, and even with temporary seats added, it'll only be about 3,000 capacity. We'll put more than that in the Baum Walker stands on a Tuesday in February against ULM with the temps being 40 degrees.
But look for the Hog fans to be there Friday night in large numbers (for Hog-Land park) against MO State. I live in OP and I know a LOT of Arkansas alums from the area who are planning to go. Lots of current students from this area are home for Summer and going over. Friday night the place should be just about full, and it'll be 80+ percent Hog fans.
The one variable that could affect it is that MANY of the Northwest Arkansas Hog fans who would normally make the short drive up and fill Hog-Land, will be in OKC. Making our first WCWS is a huge deal, and lots of the folks I've heard from are going there to witness history.
Stating the obvious here but obvious money grab that does nothing to make the sport and tournament any better or more interesting or more competitive.
The fact of the matter is that every D1 team is already in the Tournament by virtue of playing in their conference tournaments. A team that goes 0-30 in the regular season can get on a highly improbable heater and run the table through the conference tourney, secure the automatic bid, and then win 6 more for the national title.
In the current setup, teams are playing the regular season to give themselves that luxury of not having to win their conference tournament in order to secure a place in the NCAA tournament, along with preferred seeding.
There is no compelling reason for expanding. It doesn't help the mid-majors. It doesn't provide competitive balance. What it DOES do is increase games as opportunities for us to see Limu Emu and Doug. It gives more chances for pay services like Peacock and Prime Video to grab their bags of cash by televising games I'd never watch on a Wednesday night in January. They're just trying to add "inventory."
The jagoffs in suits will get a bit richer on something the rest of us don't really want.

You are fine. Seriously, you lost a series 2 to 1 to maybe the best team in the conference. Big deal.
A pretty favorable schedule ahead.
I don't disagree that dropping 2 to UGA isn't cause for alarm. However, doing so and collecting 6 errors in Game 3 is extremely troublesome. Errors have nothing to do with the level of competition you're facing and everything to do with attention to detail. DVH's teams have been operating consistently at a high level for several years precisely because he fielded teams that did all the little things well - especially in fielding and baserunning. This team has a lot of talent, but it has the tendency for crucial mental errors.

Spent a rainy Fall weekend at a cabin in Snowball, on the banks of the Buffalo River back in 1995. Absolutely gorgeous part of the country.

Shame Daly couldn’t get one for Arkansas.
For now Maria Jose Marin will have to do. Not a bad consolation
No. Go Michigan. Go whatever team is playing against tennessee too. Hope any remaining sec teams lose by a million.

We were definitely better in the Big8/Big12
We had a respectable program back then. Now we come into the SEC and we’re one of the worst programs here. Even Mississippi probably looks at us as a layup win
The Haith/Kim Anderson years really hurt us
Remember that '94 team that went undefeated in the big 8 but lost by 52 to eventual National Champion Arkansas? Good times.

ADs Jeff Long and Hunter Yuracheck pissed off too many hog fans rich and poor.
Don't forget John White who, as Chancellor stated it was his intent to de-emphasize athletics and direct as much funding as possible to academics. He actively sabotaged Nolan, while also withholding resources from the football program. We've not recovered almost two decades later.

We all know his favorite media timeout of each half is the Under Sixteen timeout. (allegedly)

FU is a matchup nightmare for us. While I think we have an advantage in the backcourt, theirs is really good. Not much of a gap there. And their front line should feast on ours.

The most obvious bullshite call was the phantom 4th foul on Clemence.
Aggy wearing #5 jersey should have fouled out of the game before the first media timeout. Guy was hugging Acuff around the waist on every in-bounds play. Aggy is fortunate the officials were as lenient on that as they were.
Also, late in the second half after the outcome had been decided, the goofy caucasian Aggy got a pair of and-ones after lowering his shoulder into Ewin, with Ewin just standing in one spot with his arms in the air. Somehow, that got called a foul on Ewin both times.
Saying Aggy got screwed on the calls is just Aggy being Aggy. Nobody will argue that this officiating crew was competent, but it's ridiculous to say one team was given preferential treatment by their incompetence.
