If prothro hadn’t gotten hurt when Bama was 10-0.. and I belive #4 or 5, then two straight losses to LSU and Auburn, but I belive less than 7 points total.. he would have probably kept his job and we may never have gotten saban.

The fact that he lost 8 games over that 2-year stretch, with all that talent, shows how bad of a head coach he truly was.

Jesus christ, I've never seen/heard anyone whose last name wasn't "Harsin" defend that motherfricker with such passion.
Welcome to the board, Bryan.

I figured someone would just go all in. All worthy contenders.

Had Bama gone 13-0 here, and with Prothro (who was injured in that Florida game) they very well may have, we might have gotten a 4-team playoff a lot sooner as either them or Texas would’ve been left out of the national title game, making it two years in a row an unbeaten was left sitting at home.

I don't think Mumme belongs on this list. UK was dead when he got here and he breathed life into the program...at least for a while.
Consider that UK hasn't had a coach with a winning conference record since Bear Bryant.

Was he the HC when the 5th down happened?
No - he was fired after the 88 season. Replaced by Bob Stull - who was the coach for the 5th down debacle.
Woody is on this list because he was the HC for Vandy in late 90s early 2000s. NOTE: Woody's overall college record (Mizzou, Vandy) is an impressive 27-71-1. He was consistent if nothing else.

Did Gerry DiNardo make it 2000 or was he fired in Dec 1999. He should be on this list... or at least honorable mention at No. 11. He was terrible.

Some of these names on this list aren't even that terrible. As a Florida fan, Napier has gotta be on the list.
All the other failed Florida head coaches don't really make the list. They were flawed, but not the worst.
Napier is a no-brainer here. It should be almost impossible for a coach to perform that badly at a place like Florida. We've had our fair share of hires that didn't work out, but Napier took ineptitude to a whole different level.

up by 3 TDs in the 4th quarter and you call for a jump ball on a deep throw in the endzone to a short guy?

1b) John L. Smith*
*Interim, but did coach full season.
John "Loss" Smith was a blessing for the Aggies, generating the largest win margin for A&M in the Arkansas series in that 2012 game-- 58-10 W for A&M.
That 2012 game also started the longest win streak for A&M in the Arkansas series filled with exciting games but which Jimbo managed to lose in 2021. Before that 2012 game, Bobby Petrino was whipping the Ags.
For these reasons, from the Aggies fans' perspective, yea, John L Smith should be on this list. His 2012 Hogs team made me feel bad for Arky fans. In 2011, Arky was 11-2, 6-2 in SEC, and 5th ranked team in the country. In 2012, under John L Smith, Arky season was 4-8, 2-6 in SEC.

I really hope I see the day that he’s honored in BDS for winning a Cotton Bowl and weathering the storm between sanctions and Saban.
I thought 2005 was going to be the year when Shula was going to get over the probation years and start building Bama back. It looked like he was starting to gain some traction in recruiting. I think he had just signed Andre Smith and JPW if I recall and made a strong push on Tebow that went to the wire. I know he lost to LSU and Auburn that year but did beat UT and Florida. Also picked up Greg after winning that Cotton Bowl.
I think his downfall was letting the players run the program. I hear Brodie just came and went as he pleased. No real accountability. Stuff that Saban had to correct from Day 1.

No barn coaches? You know how many coaches they've fired since 2000?
DuBose won an SEC title in '99.
Shula had a 10 win season when we were at about 75% strength.
