Is this supposed to be groundbreaking? Literally every coach in the SEC will destroy that inept man.

Meh?

Ms st ranked 104th in defense last year.

This year, the only one under Grantham, top 10.

Meh??

He's a horrible fit, knows nothing about the South, it's football culture, has no recruiting relationships, etc etc. This is Bret Bielema on a smaller scale.

It actually won't matter that much once he gets his offense up and rolling. James Franklin hired him to be his OC. That's tells me something.

Yeah, I'm definitely not stressing Mullen now. John Cohen knows what the frick he's doing. We'll be just fine.

Like Saban before LSU? Meyer?

Saban and Meyer... two legendary genius coaches... at least had the benefit of head coaching experience before coming down, and both got jobs at schools that practically recruit themselves. That ain't Mississippi State. For every Saban or Meyer, there's a half dozen Ron Zooks.

I think he is a very solid hire.

Yes, meh. That number is inflated by playing 4 non-P5 opponents, 1 of which State held to something like 10 yards and the fact that State was 7th nationally in plays against, making "total yards" a much less meaningful number.

They were 10th nationally in yards per game against. They were 39th nationally in yards per play against. And then, once you get rid of Charleston Southern and BYU things continue to drop.

In conference games State had the following ranks

Yards Per Game : 5th (343.8)
Yards Per Play : 7th (6.00)

Against the best offenses on their schedule State gave up the following in YPP

LSU : 4.66
Georgia : 7.48
Auburn : 9.13
Alabama : 7.93
Ole Miss : 6.57

Grantham is ok, but he's extremely exploitable.

It’s a good risk hire for State. State was going to have a hard time making a hire of a proven head coach without major flaws. They were not going to get a Fisher or a Kelly.

So instead of getting a proven head coach, they went with an up,and coming asst coach. It’s a smart move but carries a fundamental risk to all such hires.

Some smart coordinators turn into great head coaches, some lack one or more important skill sets to the head coach job and are best at being career coordinators. It’s true in business too, some great mgrs don’t transition well to ceo jobs.

But most good head coaches were good coordinators first. State moved quickly and got a good guy. Their AD sure looks at this point to be more on the ball than the ADs at Ole Miss and Tennessee, a low bar that might be.

People laughed in my face 2 weeks ago when I said State was a better job than Tennessee. Who’s laughing now?

With our school administration’s record of running this athletic department the last 9 years I’ll happily go with their opinion

Right now it seems like half of the people think Grantham is staying and the other half think he is going to Florida. Will probably know tomorrow.
