I don't know, there been some great football programs in the past.
There was Alabama in the 70s.
Also, there was 60s Alabama.
Of course, who could forget Alabama of the 20s and 30s.
It's just too hard to choose.

Saban >>>>>>>>>>>>> Bear
This is something most of our fans haven't come to terms with yet. Saban is the GOAT and Bear is the former GOAT. If you compare eras and consider the parity in today's game it's really not that close and Sabans not done yet.

Saban era is easily the best. What is odd to contemplate is that Spurrier was on the cusp of the same domination. He did dominate the SEC but was incredibly close to being in several more title games. I think if the 4 team playoff had been around, he would have ended up with more titles. Point is, the SEC's dominance goes back further than just the past 15 years or so.

Yes but keep in mind that it’s all Saban and not Bama. He’d be doing the same thing at any big time program.
He didn't do it at LSU. He never even had back to back 10 win seasons there. He's had 10 out of 11 at Bama.

An impressive thing about the current Bama run is not just the wins but lack of ugly losses. No blowouts or losses to bad teams. Many of the losses could have been wins with just one break somewhere.
An impressive thing about the Miami run is that it happened under three different coaches with no ties to each other and the one who laid the foundation left after the first title.
Schnellenberger leaving Miami when he did was one of the worst coaching moves, although I think Jimmy Johnson made them better. Same for Butch Davis after stockpiling all that early ‘00s talent.

It’s certainly the greatest run ever in CFB. Wooden’s UCLA basketball run in the 60s-70s is still the top dynasty in college sports, 10 NCs in 12 years.

So I guess LSU is not a “big time program” since he didn’t do it there.

LSU made Saban, or so I’ve heard.

Saban is the greatest, the guy from OU and some of those ND coaches (Leahy, Rockne, Parseghian) were arguably as good as the Bear.

Perhaps, but they coached in the segregated era. Bryant's early years were also in that era, but the latter part, the teams were integrated. I think that's important to note.
For the record, I would have no problem whatsoever counting things like national titles starting with the integrated teams. Who knows for sure that some of those great black teams at Grambling, Florida A&M, Tennessee State, etc, weren't as good as or even better than the pre integration major college teams at Alabama, Notre Dame, Texas, etc?

No, THIS is the combo of Bama AND Saban. This success happened at Bama before in the 60s and 70s. That may have been the greatest 20 year stretch in history.
Saban would not be able to sustain this kind of run at just ANY big time program. He sure as hell had a better first 5 years at Bama than LSU and Bamas program was in worse shape when he took over. Bama didn't get back to full 85 scholarships until 2009 because of the probation. 99 percent of teams in college Football would have took years and years to recover from that. See USC, see Miami. They are still ho hum. Bama benefits from Saban but Saban benefits from Bama. It's why he never left.
He would win at any big program.
He would not win like THIS at any big program.

Yeah you could make the argument that a Saban benefits from the prestige Bama has because of Bear, but honestly he had LSU fricking loaded and probably would have won 1-2 more at LSU at least.

They have to be. Saban has them in the hunt literally every year. Every year the defense is one of the best in the nation. He continued to become great when he let his offense evolve with the game when he quit trying to fight it.
Meanwhile, Les Miles was going to keep the 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense for the rest of his life, which was his downfall.
LSU fans won’t like this, but Bama should have won the first 2011 game. They only punted twice and missed 5 FGs. The championship wasn’t much different except they were making the field goals. Les had no answer once we couldn’t run the ball. That game was over the second the rematch was announced.

It's all about Saban, maybe it's because I am not 60 or 70 years old and grew up watching bama only win 1 NC in the almost 30 year time period between 1980-2008. I honestly looked at bama as a program that had to cheat bigly to win at a very high level (hell-I still believe that). Bama football was just a dysfunctional mess in the time period between Bear and Saban.
I formed this opinion by watching Bama teams coached by the likes of Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings (the only good coach of the bunch), Mike Dubose, Dennis Franchione and Mike Shula. It was basically a few decades of the Jerry Springer show, SEC football style.

Disagree 100%. This is why when Saban leaves bama we are all gonna have a blast watching the gumps cannibalize the next coach. Anyone who thinks LSU fans are bipolar are in for a real treat when those loons in that fanbase start losing again.
He left LSU right when he had the momentum going. Les Miles was able to win 1 NC and almost 2 from 2005-2011 with the momentum that Saban created. Do you really believe Saban wouldn't have won at least 3 or 4? Seriously.

One big difference between Saban at Bama and Saban at LSU is he started at Bama with a lot more credibility and that helped recruiting, which is the lifeblood of any college program.
I think if Saban had gone to any other top five program in 2007 (with a national title and a couple of years as an NFL HC on his resume - none of which he had when he started at LSU) then I think he would have results similar to Bama. But I don’t think Bama would be anywhere near as good if someone else - anyone else - had been hired in 2007 at Bama.
Both are great for each other, but Bama needs Saban more than Saban needs Bama.
