No, THIS is the combo of Bama AND Saban.
It's all about Saban, maybe it's because I am not 60 or 70 years old and grew up watching bama only win 1 NC in the almost 30 year time period between 1980-2008. I honestly looked at bama as a program that had to cheat bigly to win at a very high level (hell-I still believe that). Bama football was just a dysfunctional mess in the time period between Bear and Saban.
I formed this opinion by watching Bama teams coached by the likes of Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings (the only good coach of the bunch), Mike Dubose, Dennis Franchione and Mike Shula. It was basically a few decades of the Jerry Springer show, SEC football style.

Saban would not be able to sustain this kind of run at just ANY big time program. He sure as hell had a better first 5 years at Bama than LSU
Disagree 100%. This is why when Saban leaves bama we are all gonna have a blast watching the gumps cannibalize the next coach. Anyone who thinks LSU fans are bipolar are in for a real treat when those loons in that fanbase start losing again.
Alabama football is not a normal program. It attracts top coaching talent. While you listed the coaches between Coach Bryant and Coach Saban, you missed something.
When Coach Perkins left, Alabama interviewed Coach Bobby Bowden, who wanted the job. In fact he had told his assistants that they were all going to Tuscaloosa. It was only by a HUGE mistake made by the president of the university and the BOT that he was no coaching at Alabama in the 1990's and 2000's....
That was 4 years after Coach Bryant had left....
so Alabama fans will give coaches a hard time, but Alabama will find another top coach fairly fast (not the question is will they hire him.)

Had Saban stayed at L7U he would have been extremely hard to beat.
But sooner or later you would have hired an AD like you have now who would have put his hands on Nicks program and he would have left.
Bama has had enough sense to not bother his program in the least.
And that and the roots he put down in Tuscaloosa—NorthPort after the storm is why he is not coaching at Texas. That And the fat cats wanted to be able to tell him how he needed to coach.

Yes but keep in mind that it’s all Saban and not Bama. He’d be doing the same thing at any big time program.
Here's my problem -- for quite a while now, one of the go-to trolls of Saban has been that if he's such a great coach, why didn't he dominate at Michigan State and only win one at LSU? The troll bread gets buttered on both sides way too often in these parts.
You can't really use this troll effectively anyway. Too many eras of dominating Bama programs. It doesn't work with programs like Bama, ND, OU, etc. You can't even use it with LSU since LSU has maintained a pretty decent, just not dominating, run post-Saban.

quote:You're looking at it completely wrong. It's not that hard to win at UA. We can help make a bad coach look mediocre, a mediocre coach look decent, a decent coach look good, etc.
But they couldn't make elite- Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings, Mike Dubose, Dennis Franchione and Mike Shula? Once again, interesting.
Perkins finished in the top 3 in the SEC in 3 of his 4 seasons (also finished in the top 15 in the polls 3/4 years). Finished 2nd and went 10-3 in his last season and finished in the top 10 in the polls. He only had 1 winning season in the NFL in his 8 years in the league, and went 2-9 in his one season at Arkansas St.
Curry split the conference title in his 3rd and final season at UA (and finished in the top 10). Improved each season (7-5, 9-3, 10-2). This was the only 10 win season he had in his 20 year career as a head coach.
Stallings had 4 10 win seasons in 7 years at UA, including a NC. 3 top 5 finishes, won the West 3 times and played in the SECCG 4 times. In 7 seasons at Texas A&M, he only had 1 winning season.
Dubose was a terrible coach but still won the SEC, beating Spurrier twice in the same year, and finished in the top 10.
Franchione was only at UA for 2 seasons, but won the West in his 2nd season after taking over the pile of shite that Dubose left.
Shula had to deal with heavy sanctions and was hired 3 months before the season began. Had terrible luck with injuries (especially on offense), but still had a 10 win season and finished in the top 10 in 2005.

Really?.
Bama won 1 NC from 1980-2008 and had numerous sex scandals, investigations, probation's, lost scholarships, vacated games. I could go on and on and on and on. But I won't unless your thick-skulled redneck arse wants me to.

LSU also was a dysfunctional mess until, just like bama, we hired a guy we now call little Nicky. How hard is it to admit?
I lived through the 90's and I didn't shoot, stab, poison or hurt anyone over an amatuer football team.
Get your mind right, you old fart.

LSU has a better history than 90% of all CFB programs. Maybe that's why I'm not impressed. You dumb inbred redneck.

The way Alabama has absolutely OWNED LSU for the over 100 year series (52-25), you'd think that they would have enough sense to keep their mouths shut when it comes to criticizing Alabama.

You are so unaware. When LSU fans talk about bama we don't speak with awe. We speak with disdain of a culture so poor, fat, lazy and stupid that their favorite pastime is following college football 24/7/365. We are laughing at you, pal.

I'm glad one of you finally admitted that LSU is the your real rival.
I've never understood why bama claims Au and Tn as their rivals when they play us in every sport like its their Super Bowl. It's weird and creepy.
As for baseball and basketball-you should be proud to have the lead in the head-to-head series.
Do you want to compare hardware in those two sports?
Do you? I'll post the cold hard facts. Don't dare me man. I will open up a can of e-Whoopass on you in a heartbeat.

Bama's a great program but they were damn lucky to have had those two coaches.
When Bryant got to Alabama in 1958, he was 91-39-8 (.688) as a head coach. When Saban got to Alabama in 2007, he was 91-42-1 (.682) as a head coach. Nothing they had done prior to their arrival at Alabama indicated they would ever be as successful as they eventually ended up becoming. Did you honestly see Nick Saban winning five national championships in a decade of coaching at Alabama? I sure as hell didn't. I would have been happy with just one.
So is it the coaches, the program, or a combination of both? I would argue the last point as being the most accurate.
