no. Like Chizik he just caught lightning in a bottle with a one and done wonder boy offensive coach, and a quarterback that had a single great year. Well, actually Cam Newton was all american at the junior college, but that aside.

Well at least he won it there and not at some other school and conference like the one you glued your football program to

Is Ed's 7+ million per year contract guaranteed for all 6 years?
Asking because it is going to be GLORIOUS when LSU realizes they just handcuffed themselves to Chizik 2.0 for 6 years.

Woodward, baby!

Actually, it is going to be "glorious" when Coach O hires great replacements for Brady and Aranda, keeps his Top 5 recruiting classes going, kicks arse with Brennan and the Max Johnson at QB, and works with Woodward on a lifetime contract down the line.
Your faux Aggie Woodward (BR boy and LSU alumnus that he is) will be kicking y'alls asses in EVERY sport for the forseeable future....

Who has been on a steep decline since winning said championship.

7 million and the championship along with the opportunity to compete for more, as opposed to 7.5 million and the perennial 3-4 place finish. LSU has the bargain. ATM is hosed.

Just to answer your original question, and correct an error:

6+ million/year

And we don't know yet the details on terms of guaranteed money. I would guess it's not fully guaranteed, though.

An Aggy laughing at LSU for paying a coach AFTER he actually wins something?

I hope you cherish that self-made national championship trophy where the date will be blank for the rest of time.

Well, that is until they go another 80 years without a championship and then have to replace it with "21__"

Except he won a National championship. The wheels could fall off next year and the money gained from that one national championship would make it worth it.

A&M on the other hand, handcuffed themselves to a coach who will never win a national championship there.

Actually he isn’t like Chiz at all. Ed inherited a mess.

A mess? LSU was averaging 9 wins a (regular) season over the 5 seasons prior to O taking over. The program hadn't won fewer than 8 regular season games in 16 years. And a large chunk of the 2017 recruiting class (the one that provided the foundation for this season) had already committed before Les was fired (though Ed deserves a lot of credit for keeping it together). Chiz took over an Auburn team that had just finished 5-7. Their biggest win being a barn-burner 3-2 victory over MSU. Tuberville had essentially quit. His final game being a 36-0 blowout loss to Bama. In no way, shape or form did Ed inherit a "mess". What he inherited was a program brimming with big time potential being held back by a stubborn HC who simply REFUSED to change his offensive approach.

quote:

Brought in his staff and players

He kept Les's entire defensive staff. Including himself. That aforementioned 2017 was mostly compiled under Les (though again, O convinced them to sign despite the coaching change)

Can O sustain success? It seems pretty likely considering LSU has won at least 8 games per season for the last 20 years. Plus, Ed is always going prioritize recruiting at a high level. So no, I don't foresee a Chiz post-Cam/Malzahn dropoff (even if the offense never again matches this season's insane production level). LSU will spend the money to try to hire a great staff and they will always have talent under O.

My fellow LSU brethren will no doubt be furious at this thought, but I really hope LSU didn't unnecessarily handcuff themselves to O with a lengthy guaranteed extension. Not that I don't think O did a terrific job this season (He definitely earned a raise in base pay this year). But that he didn't really have the negotiating leverage at this point to force LSU to lock him in in a manner similar to Jimbo (i.e. Jimbo had significant demand from multiple power conf. schools A&M, FSU, and I'm sure others would have wanted to hire him at the time he wanted to leave FSU). However, I don't see LSU going into a Chizik level tank either.
