They would have died of fear or looked for a safe room.

This soft generation would not make it in Patton's 3rd army.

Patton was at neither Guadalcanal nor Normandy.

So you shouldn’t have a problem with Americans who think kneeling during the anthem is tacky. Everyone has an opinion and are free to voice it. A majority of us find it distasteful for a legitimate reason.

No, its a pretty stupid reason, and shows a lack of intelligence, history and critical thinking, but don't have a problem with you thinking that way.

And yet they are. I say that as a military veteran and coming from a military family. I have family members who fall into this despised generation and they are currently serving.

They are not experiencing anything is, I must say, a somewhat shabby argument when you are talking about 18 year olds. "These people are just old enough to vote! How dare they not have the hard earned life experience that I do?"

I'm just a few years younger then you I would imagine. I am, in fact, 49. I can site a great deal of incidents where both the Baby Boomers and the Gen X made this current generation look like warrior monks. We do not come from generations that can piss on those that follow us from a great height.

I am not some teen aged punk. I have been there. I have done that. Do not presume to judge me.

I do not need evidence because I am part of some spoiled generation. I need evidence because I have been around long enough to know that sometimes people are mad and talking off their heads. You are mad.

You are mad because people are kneeling during the national anthem, despite the fact that both of us have served in a military devoted to ensuring they get the right to do just that. Your 30 years in the military? It was so kids can display their political beliefs... whether you like those beliefs or not.

I think kneeling during the anthem sucks. But I will go back into uniform tomorrow and fight the entire world so that kids today can kneel if they want to.

Either you believe what this country was built on, which includes political dissent that does not agree with your viewpoints, or you want something that is not what we intended when we created this great nation.

The kids are alright. Bitch and moan all you want, but they will do just fine. Just like the rest of us did just fine when it was our time in the barrel.

Wrong.

Also, why you ain’t mad that a bunch of ignorant bastards was on campus waving round a flag of a country (the confederate states) that attacked the United States? Why you ain’t outraged bout that direspect, huh?

Seems to me ain’t nothin more disrespectful to a country than to be wavin a flag of another country that attacked it. They basically sayin the American flag is shite and that they shouldn’t be under it.

I generally continue doing whatever the frick I was doing prior to it starting. Playing it at a sporting event is just pandering and pointless. It’s not like sports is only an American institution.

There are different platforms to voice your displeasure or protest against social injustice and the National Anthem isn't one I accept. It's the main reason why I don't respect these athletes when they do this. If they want to do it before or after the game then I'd have no problem with that and would even participate with them.

Mainly their parents

That would be us Gen X crew, so I guess we're to blame.

Service to them is what a fraternity or sorority required them to do to make their semester requirements.
actually, the Millenials are quite a bit more service oriented than generations past. However, they are more dependent on others at the same time as, our fault again, the gates toward development and adulthood have shifted. At least that is what the US Army War College is teaching its senior leaders nowadays, so maybe you can relate.

quote:

This generation is not learning, because they are not experiencing anything.

This is a paraphrased observation of every father ever from frustrations over the next generation listening to too many camp fire stories, to reading too many books, to too much radio, to too much TV, to too much internet, etc.

At some point in America, kids were likely chastised for rolling a hoop around with a stick too often. Now, it's an iPad/iPhone game eating their time.

Times change and technology impacts culture. Just because they are not experiencing life the way we did, does not mean they are not experiencing life.

I am an old curmudgeon for the most part, but have learned it is sometimes best to accept that life will go on no matter how we fight against certain aspects of it. We make our impact on being examples of the values that we hold dear. Co-opt others to internalize and embrace those and to hell with whatever mode they choose to "experience" their lives.

I am not disappointed by my children, they are turning out fine. What I see from most their age concerns me. Again, This is not a case of a clueless parent who grew up totally different. What I see is the start of the “Lost Generation”. You are correct about they have access to more tools of knowledge , however the internet usually provides an abbreviated and glamorous version of the truth. This country was built on having the next generation create a better quality of life than the previous. I fear this may turn. This is not a fear of an old man sitting on the porch.

Something the Baby snooker generation failed at miserably. The amount of damage this generation did on the environment is monumental.

I have been against the NFL and other pro athletes kneeling, but I am OK with the Ole Miss players.

College is a time to figure out these things and freedom of speech on college campus' across the nation should be of utmost importance. But I think we should do our best to do things in a respectful manner even when in dissent.

If I were the coach I would have asked them to keep their hands over their hearts as they kneeled. It would have still gotten their point across and also showed respect to those who fought for our freedom imo.

They are not professional athletes who are being paid millions of dollars and they should not be silenced on college campuses but rather engaged in debate like it is supposed to be.

Exactly. If anything, they kneeled in honor of the American flag.

If the players "just wanted to kneel" they would have done so before now. It was in direct response to those choosing Oxford as a place to gather and spew hate.

This is the first time that I can say I am proud of how the Ole Miss institution, student body, and athletes have responded and acted.

That’s a pretty damn good idea. That or bow their heads. Kneel but keep your head down and eyes on the floor. That way you don’t look like you lookin round tryin to see who lookin at you. Boeing has also been a sign of honor.
