Whoever is doing the offensive scouting for Deboer needs a raise immediately. Our starting QB was a 3 star commit to SMU. Starting freshman RB was a 3 star commit to Boise St & arguably our best WR was a 3 star from New Jersey. That's not luck he hit home runs with all 3 of those guys.

They've been significant upgrades over what Saban left Deboer.

But yall think Lane Kiffin is the next Bear Bryant even though he’s yet to win a playoff game. No one is trying to convince LSU delusional fan smooth brains. LSU is 0-2 vs Deboer in 2 double digit victories. He’s not Nick Saban, but no one is. I think he’s doing a really good job with what he inherited.

Those are the opinions of Loserana State fans. It’s how they cope.
On one hand, Bama is a roster full of talentless bums who only win due to luck or the refs. On the other, Bama is chock full of talent and therefore DeBoer is an absolute clown for not winning a title already.
They pull either of those out when the argument suits them.

It’s also convenient to say “Bama lost 40+ players” when the reality was only half of them were actually on scholarship. And of that half only a handful were staters or contributors. But to hear Gumps talk, it’s like they lost their entire starting depth chart.

Compare it to LSU’s rebuild. We had to bring in starters at QB, WR, RB, TE(for any depth), OL, DL, LB and Safety. The only spot that was set was CB. Yet people thought money could fix everything and Kiffin will get shite for any game he loses this year.

The portal is making it to where you can fill spots each year with some key additions but you still need some guys committed to the program for longer than 2 years. That juggling act is probably tougher than people realize.

This isn't even remotely true. Were you even following SEC football in 2007-09? Yeah, Saban needed the senior cancers he inherited to leave. But this is the talent Shula recruited and left Saban:

All American and first round pick OT Andre Smith.
All American C Antoine Caldwell
All American OG Mike Johnson
All American S Rashad Johnson
All American PK Leigh Tiffin
All American DB/PR Javier Arenas
All SEC RB Glen Coffee

As well as other starters on the 2009 NC team. John Parker Wilson ended up being a perfectly decent QB who was one quarter away from playing for and probably winning a national championship in 2008.

The notion that Saban took over a team with little to no talent is utterly absurd.

This is a damn good post. 2006 Alabama didn’t get blown out in any game. The team had talent but Shula and the assistants failed to get the most out of it.

Shula was 26-23 under impossible circumstances. It’s why I hope to see the day he’s paid his respect at Bryant Denny. He took the job when no one else would and given the circumstances - he kept it afloat.

In other words, it’s a terrible stat to try to compare the two. Saban had a much more difficult rebuild and it isn’t close.

Think what you want. Its not just about talent. Saban had to completely establish the program from the ground up. Deboer walked into a established system with everything in place that was at playoff level status.

Saban took over a dumpster fire(2-6 SEC). Bama had just come off a playoff birth when DeBoer took the reins. It’s apples and oranges comparison.

Ed O and Brian Kelly had the exact same winning percentage at LSU .738. Who do you think was more successful.

Alabama doesn't want to be like LSU and Auburn firing the head coach every 2-3 seasons. That would be pretty terrible. Got to give the guy some time, especially when you know it's been a rebuild job.

Alabama had a 798–292–43 record before Saban. Also had 12 national titles, Including 21 conference championships. They’ve been a powerhouse team for a long time before Saban

And 2007 Alabama should be gauged by the team that beat the shite out of Tennessee the morning that the Textbook 5 were suspended. A kid of an offensive coordinator took the vaunted John Chavis to the woodshed. The suspensions of those players though had an impact on the rest of the season

I agree that Saban had the tougher rebuild, but he left Deboer alot of garbage too. Milroe at QB. Awful RB room & the absolute worst WR room of his entire era. LBs were probably the worst of his era as well & talent at DL had dropped off pretty significantly.

The fact that he almost took that '23 team with Tommy Reese at OC & Kevin Steele at DC to a NCG is one of his best coaching jobs ever. I think Saban realized it was never going to get any better or easier for him so he rightly decided to hang it up.

No doubt. That's not by accident. Someone knows what the hell they're doing. Kind of like his record against top 25 opponents. That's not by accident.

Is DeBoer perfect? Nope. He's got his flaws. He's no Saban (yet), but he doesn't have to be Saban. He's still got tons of time to improve on his flaws. He's got his best team since he's been at Alabama and that's now with his own players that he recruited for his system.

DeBoer has only been coaching at the D1 level for 7 seasons and 5 of those 7 seasons at the P4/P5 level. He already has conference, playoff, and national championship appearances on his resume at 2 different schools. FWIW, it took Saban 10 seasons as a D1 coach to win his first national championship

Kirby was 26-7

Come on now.

One came in after a 6-7 Mike Shula season, the other after a 12-2 Nick Saban one.

Sure and there's a difference between knowing a program won a bunch of games before you were born, and seeing it happen in real time with your own eyes like recruits saw Nick Saban do.

Its crazy there's even so much push back on the topic. The idea that Alabama had to rebuild after Nick Saban left is just flat out retarded. He left behind a perfectly fine program.
