Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables is sticking with John Mateer at quarterback.

Venables confirmed Wednesday that Mateer will remain the Sooners’ starter when Oklahoma returns from its bye week to face Texas in the Red River Rivalry.

Mateer has come under scrutiny after Oklahoma’s 41-13 loss to Georgia last weekend. He turned the ball over three times in the loss, including two fumbles, with one returned for a touchdown.

Turnovers have been an issue for Mateer all season, but Venables isn't making a change at this point.

Backup quarterbacks Whitt Newbauer and freshman Bowe Bentley have also drawn attention in Norman, but Mateer will remain QB1 as the Sooners prepare for their matchup against No. 1 Texas at the Cotton Bowl.
