DeBoer now holds the same record as Saban in his first 33 games

Both had to do rebuild jobs in their own ways. Saban had to bring Alabama out of the depths of mediocrity. DeBoer had to completely rebuild the roster after 40+ players transferred out in his first season when Saban retired. He's now in his third season and has them on the right path. He spotted Keelon Russell when he was a 3 star.

When Shula left in 2006, Alabama was about the same train-wreck auburn is. Saban winning a NC within 3 years was quite possibly the biggest turn-around miracle of coaching to ever take place in college football........Deboer had no where near the same obstacles to face as Saban did. In 2023 Alabama had won the SEC west with a 12-2 record and lost in the Rose bowl in the CFP Semifinal.

This isn't a fair comparison. Bama was a mess when Saban took over. DeBoer is doing fine, but he inherited a much better situation. A better comparison would be how he compares to Kirby at this point in his UGA career.

I do agree the rebuild didn’t compare to what Saban took on. I’ll also say it’s ludicrous to think the team DeBoer took over was the one Saban won the SEC with.

And they lost 40+ of those players when DeBoer coached his very first game. That is a significant portion of the roster. It's not like all that talent was there when he got there. A lot of it left. He's had to build it back up.

They are definitely different in their own ways. People like to act like DeBoer walked into a gold mine. That's not exactly what happened.

Ohio State had over 30 players transfer out after last season. The majority of players leaving places like Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, etc are players who ended up being over rated coming out of high school and needed to transfer to smaller programs. There was still plenty of talent left after Saban left. Number of transfers out doesnt tell the entire story.

And then you need to consider the massive advantage Nick Saban left when it comes to the reputation of Alabama's football program. Recruits for the next ten years will know Alabama is a program you can go to win national championships. Nick Saban didnt have that when he first got to Alabama. He had to build up recruiting from the ground up.

Saban didn't have to deal with NIL and the transfer portal.

Those are the opinions of Loserana State fans. It’s how they cope.
On one hand, Bama is a roster full of talentless bums who only win due to luck or the refs. On the other, Bama is chock full of talent and therefore DeBoer is an absolute clown for not winning a title already.
They pull either of those out when the argument suits them.

It's literally been like this for 100 years now at Alabama.

Not necessarily comparable, but it’s also worth noting that DeBoer lost like 40 players from the roster when Saban stepped down, and we are now in the NIL era which has its own difficulties.

Alabama won 6 national titles in a 12 year span for the last 100 years?

This isn't even remotely true. Were you even following SEC football in 2007-09? Yeah, Saban needed the senior cancers he inherited...like DJ Hall...to leave. But this is the talent Shula recruited and left Saban:

All American and first round pick OT Andre Smith.
All American C Antoine Caldwell
All American OG Mike Johnson
All American S Rashad Johnson
All American PK Leigh Tiffin
All American DB/PR Javier Arenas
All SEC RB Glen Coffee

As well as other starters on the 2009 NC team. John Parker Wilson ended up being a perfectly decent QB who was one quarter away from playing for and probably winning a national championship in 2008.

The notion that Saban took over a team with little to no talent is utterly absurd.

I think deboar had a more established program to work with then saban did. it wasnt hard to convince good players to come to Alabama after where saban had them. when saban came to Alabama they werent just coming off a dynastic run weve never seen before.

plus, every school is losing a shite ton of players every off season and rebuilding, the reason they are still always good teams is because they have money and they have the recent success that makes it easy to convince the best players to come there, thats the portal and high school recruiting.
