It feels like they kept acting that way the last 2 seasons but their actual team makeup and nature didn't match up with it. I think they REALLY missed Skyler Mays this season.
We haven't had a good inside presence like we had with Bigsby Williams and Naz Reid the past two years. And we haven't had a defensive player on the perimeter like Taylor either. Watford is certainly talented and has games where he is unstoppable on offense, but he's pretty soft. LSU's issue this year is we had a lot of scorers but not enough size in the paint or guys who play good defense. Losing Bigsby Williams and Marlon Taylor was a very noticeable difference.

Yep - LSU's ability to just play volleyball with the offensive glass in their SEC Championship year made a huge difference - especially when you had guys like Smart and Waters slashing to the hole and forcing defenders to help. It's a lot harder to offensively rebound when you are shooting shots off the dribble and aren't forcing opponents to help.
I'll be curious to see how much different the entire persona of LSU's team is next year with their returners being more athletic, defensive oriented guys.

Crean is a good coach. He rebuilt Indiana but because they have such unrealistic expectations, he got fired. It was a terrible move on them.
He hasn't done well at Georgia but I think it might be the culture in that they don't have much care in basketball. Some coaches do well at some schools and disappear when they take other jobs.

Serious question I see sweet 16 starts Saturday and Sunday. Then I see that everybody plays again on Monday and Tuesday am I seeing that right? Maybe covid !

I actually think Wade is a good coach outside of recruiting, although I think he really mishandled his team this year.
The SEC coaching has really continued to take a step up.

If your list doesn’t have Cuonzo last, then your list is bad.

quote:Bruce is the best coach in the conference IMO. He took pure shite and built a F4 team at Auburn.
I also find it funny Pearl has somehow fallen to #6 in the SEC. Guy took over possibly the worst program historically in this conference and was in the last final four that took place. But Oats and Musselman have good years so now Pearl has slipped that far down? Makes sense right

Yes, winners of Saturday play Monday and winners of Sunday play Tuesday

I think both Muss and Oats are great coaches, and can recruit as well. Cal and Wade are both great recruiters, and can out-talent a lot of teams. However, neither is all that good at actually coaching basketball. Pearl is also a great recruiter, and he coaches pretty well. The last three mentioned are also well-known cheaters so that plays a part ...
I used to think Buzz was a great coach, but recruiting is part of the game and he hasn't gotten it done at A&M. He was also terrible at dealing with COVID to the point that A&M didn't even play for a solid month! Next year will make or break him.
I don't know much about any of the others except for Barnes - he's great until the Tournament starts

Pearl's "cheating" is having a BBQ and telling people to say they didnt come. Im sure that gets all the cruits...

The situation with Buzz and aTm is bizarre. The dude won a ton of games and made the tournament 8 times in 11 years at Marquette and VaTech. That's too long and consistent of a track record to completely crash and burn the way he has.

I think A&M will come out next year and be competitive. Like you, I just can't buy that all of a sudden he can't put together a competitive roster after 2 decades of it.
And their roster should be better next year, too. If they look terrible again next year it's going to be panic time, though.

Based on this year's results I'd have Musselman at the top of the list. He is starting 3 true freshmen and 2 first year transfers and has them in the Sweet 16. While Oats has won the SEC and the tourney he is doing it with guys who have been together for a second season.

What metric are we using?
Actual SEC Coaching accomplishments weighted higher added to other coaching accomplishments
or
Internet Gut Feeling?

And Pearl has coached circles around Calipari with inferior talent his entire career. He owned Cal when he was at UT. He is 16-9 against UK in his career (that has to be one of the best) and against Cal specifically, he is 13-6.
Pearl is 8-14 head to head vs. Calipari and 9-17 vs. Kentucky in his career.
4-9 vs. Kentucky at Tennessee
3-6 vs. Calipari at Tennessee
5-8 vs. Kentucky/Cal at Auburn

Tobias Harris and Scotty Hopson were two of the dirtiest recruitments in recent memory.
He cheated his arse off here, it just wasn’t what he got in trouble for

11. Muss (no idea how to compare his wide ranging resume)
Just look at his NCAA career. He's won almost 75% of his games, which is one of the highest winning percentages in the game. He's been to the NCAAT all but two years and one was due to covid (I also think we would have gotten in last season). This is his 2nd Sweet 16.
