All things considered, it really can't be much different from games against WVU and FSU when they suddenly spend a season tanking. Granted, you can't really know ahead of time what the season would bring, but if the offers on the table are a Cutcliffe-coached Duke or an FSU that barely made bowl eligibility, I'd take that Duke game every time. Cutcliffe has a way of getting his teams to overachieve in lots of big games.
I am curious to see what Petrino will do now. He had a decent -- great, of UL at the time -- tenure as UL's coach before, but he's had only one (reasonably successful) year without Lamar during his current stint. Of course, Saban already owns his soul, so....
Edit: I wouldn't sleep on Cutcliffe. I'd take him at Vandy in a heartbeat. He can flat-out coach.

It's pathetic. If it's that hard to find solid opponents to play us in neutral site games then stop fvckin playing them.
Ohio State was invited to a home and home a couple years ago, but declined. Michigan State, not surprisingly after getting eviscerated in 2010 and pasted in 2015, backed out of a home and home as well, if memory serves me correctly.

The southern miss games were scheduled because they needed the payout after Ellis Johnson cleaned out their athletic budget. Don't know that I'd call it a favor to a team in a neighboring state, but it certainly helped southern miss dig themselves out of a self-dug hole.
I'm fine with southern miss. But Duke is a joke. And Bama fans know why I'm mad about those dirty bastards from Western Carolina.

Had nothing to do with those games, honestly. It was a mutual decision based on two things: B1G going to a 9 game schedule in the first year of the agreement, and UA had a lucrative offer for games in Dallas and Atlanta that ended up being against USC and FSU.

Like to see what other teams in the country stack up with this run of scheduled non-conf opponents:
FSU - '07
Clemson - '08
Va Tech - '09
Penn State - '10
Penn State - '11
Michigan - '12
Va Tech - '13
West Va - '14
Wisconsin - '15
Southern Cal - '16
FSU - '17
8 of these were season openers.

Come on bama you're better than this

There is a strong melt on the Bama board about it too.
Overall the OOC schedule has been fine recently, but 2019? Yeah, that’s terrible. Flame away.

I think every CFB fan should belittle schedules like that.

Tickets are going to be dirt cheap for that Duke game.

These are mostly big in name only... I've pointed this out numerous times and typically get the wrath of the bama posters for daring to present facts, but very few of these opponents were actually good teams. It is not Bama's fault... the attempt to play a big name team was there... but for whatever reasons, most of these teams were not good.
2007 Florida State: 7-6 and unranked
2008 Clemson: 7-6 and unranked
2009 Virginia Tech: 10-3 and finished #10
2010 Penn State: 7-6 and unranked
2011 Penn State: 9-4 and unranked
2012 Michigan: 8-5 and finished #24
2013 Virginia Tech: 8-5 and unranked
2014 W. Virginia: 7-6 and unranked
2015 Wisconsin: 10-3 and finished #21
2016 USC: 10-3 and finished #3
2017 Florida State: 7-6 and unranked
So in eleven seasons, you played a #3, #10, #21, and #24 ranked teams along with 7 teams that finished outside the Top 25. I would bet all of the Big 6 and the majority of the SEC played a tougher regular season OOC slate during this time period.

I could be wrong, but I think that was the year WV wussed out of a contract and we had to reschedule whoever we could get late in the process.

Alabama has ruined a lot of teams' seasons (and coaches careers ).

Yup I am counting on that. A good chance to check out the stadium.

It takes two to tango. I don't imagine decent teams are trying to play Bama with their OOC games either.

Openers since 2012:
#8 Michigan by 27 - Big Blew season over after 1 game
Va Tech by 25
W Virginnia by 10
#20 Wisconsin by 18
#20 SCal by 46 - Trojan season over after 1 game
#3 FSU by 17 - Nole season over after 1 game
Why would any good team with playoff aspirations sign up to play Bama?
It's like the NFL. Why do these other teams keep making trades with Belichick and the Pats. When will they figure it out?

Notice that Penn State is the only home and home and they were shite at the time. Alabama is scared to schedule home and homes. Hell they’re scared to schedule quality OOC teams. Dabo has had Clemson rolling for 7 years now and Alabama has yet to schedule them. Auburn on the other hand has played Clemson four times in that span. I also find it funny that Alabama waits until Lamar Jackson leaves to play Louisville.

Y'all won't even schedule Jacksonville State!...fricking JACKSONVILLE STATE!

These shite schedules are why I gave up my season tickets. I hope the stadium is half empty for Western Carolina.
That’s almost half the home schedule

That series was scheduled about a decade in advance, like most home-and-homes. You're more likely to get a quality opponent in a neutral site game because they can be scheduled 3 or 4 years out.

2008 Clemson went into the season ranked #9.
2009 Virginia Tech = #7
2012 Michigan = #8
2013 Virginia Tech = unranked
2014 West Virginia = unranked
2015 Wisconsin = #20
2016 USC = #20
2017 FSU = #3
Of the 8 teams Bama has played to start the season at a neutral site, 6 were ranked, and 4 were ranked in the top 10.
