Teams like that are exactly why the playoffs expanded to 12 rather than 8.
Exactly. It is really a 9 team playoff with the ACC, B12, and G5 champ getting auto bid teams that will typically not be real contenders. But including them is just a fact of life in this litigious "everyone must be included" world. You have to ignore it and prepare to make sure you have a top 9 team.
The only gripe is the seeding and questionable at large bids to teams with G5 level rosters and scheduling strength like SMU and Indiana. Win a bunch of games with a roster of Rudy's against a top 20-30 schedule and several ranked wins, then more power to you if you want your chance at a national title. But don't show up with a clearly less than roster, losses to every decent team you played, and a SOS in the 60-90s and ask to be considered as a serious at large title contender. It defies logic to put an at large team in that would be 10+ point underdogs to every serious team in the bracket.

And the media will then broadcast at least three Texas playoff games. Ohio State in at least two playoff games. Notre Dame in at least two playoff games. When you put those teams in the first round, their fans are going to tune in. If they end up in a later round, many fans will not bother to watch Arizona State play Indiana or SMU play Boise State. Again... this seeding arrangement has more to do with $$$$ than the better teams getting a bye.
Yeah I don’t disagree with you. I think the playoffs are a total joke and anyone who can’t see that it’s just a money grab is a literal peasant haha.

No issues with conference champs getting in, but it shouldn't be a requirement for a top 4 seed / first round bye.
Yes, feels like most people agree to this.
I'd be fine with giving all the FBS conference champions automatic bids and then seeding them appropriately - after all the playoff teams have been selected.. Tough shite Notre Dame and everyone who got second or third in the SEC or Big10 - your hoping for one of two or three at-large bids.
Would give every FBS players a shot at the playoffs and would make the bowl games better.
But it's a work in progress. They did okay for this first time.

In no known universe was Clemson going to win the 2024 CFP title.

Exactly. Both of those teams can win it all. I'd give ASU a 40% chance to beat Oregon if they matched up next round. The way klubnik played against Texas, they cold have beaten anyone. The playoffs are all about match ups, given the right match up any team is dangerous.

Why is an Aggie fan concerned about who deserves to be in the playoffs?

We shouldn't even play football games just let Mike Farrell decide the champion after National Signing Day

I honestly think the playoffs are delivering in year 1. They're working perfectly.
Here's what the playoffs were intended to do.
1 - Get the top 10 teams in the playoff. Yes, it's a 12 team playoff, but we know that a conference champ or two is going to suck many years, so as long as the top 10 teams get in, we're good.
This year the top 10 teams from the AP poll, Coaches poll and CFP poll all got in. Success. Arguments are from teams ranked 11-12 and not getting in.
2 - Don't take away importance of winning a conference title.
Success. People are complaining that teams that didn't win their conferences should get byes. That shows that conference championships ARE important.
3 - Don't make it so losing a CCG matchup is a big enough negative so that teams won't want to play in their CCG.
Success. Teams in the playoff before their CCG and then losing are still in the playoff. The lost cost the teams a bye, not a chance at a title.
4 - Appease the two big conferences.
Probably a success. If things go as I think they will, we'll likely have SEC vs Big 10 matchups to determine the final two teams in the playoff. Should that happen, both the Big 10 and SEC will have gotten EXACTLY what they wanted.
The playoff very well could go down as PERFECT this year. All the people talking about changing it are crazy.

No, money is why the CFP expanded to 12 teams instead of 8, and money will be why the earlier rounds are eventually folded into the conferences as semi-finals for the conference championships. At the end of the day, why are the B1G and SEC subsidizing the payouts of the other conferences? The current arrangement should be titled: Not for long.

Expanding past 8 teams mean there will always be teams like this in the playoffs. Hell, even with 8 that would mean 1-2 too many most years.
That said, only way to know for sure if a team belongs in the playoffs or not is to let the results on field speak for themselves.
We may not feel like some of the teams are playoff worthy, but football is weird in that the best team doesn't always have the largest number beside their name when the clock reaches 00:00. That's also what makes football the most interesting sport to watch.

I’d rewrite this as “conference champs should no longer auto-qualify for a bye”.
I like that conf champ get an auto-bid. But seeding should be based on rankings.

They are in because it was designed to give the rest of the US..outside of the SEC footprint a way in the discussion to the end. It did just what they wanted it to do.
It was never about helping the SEC get more teams in and keeping out smaller conf schools.

When the student is ready, the teacher appears.
Now you get it.
Conferences only exist for two reasons:
1. Regional-historical rivalries
2. TV rights and revenue
No other reason. So it’s time to go to a 64 team super league with divisions and a 24 team playoff.

Those 2 getting byes just looks, feels and is wrong. Just seeing their names next to 3 and 4 seeds is jolting. A total joke. The system needs some tweaking next year. Top 4 ranked teams get byes.

Did Tennessee deserve a CFP spot? They sure did not look like a good team versus Ohio State.
