The main reason is to create early separation between the haves and the have nots, allowing easier playoff paths for the haves and nearly impossible playoff paths for the have nots.

Exactly.....It's why teams like ND etc can lose 2 games in the first 8 and still be in the playoff discussion.

I say this every year, but we shouldn't have preseason polls. It should start after week 3 or 4.
It punishes and gives credit to teams all year that were ranked incorrectly in preseason. A team that's preseason top 5 can look like shite and still be top 5 if they eek out wins against crap opponents. Same is true for teams unranked that look really strong.
