These guys having these huge buyouts that they know they can fall back on is a killer for motivation seems like to me. At the slightest sign of adversity their default mode kicks in. Why wouldn’t it? It’s a terrible way to set up a contract.

Harsin wasn’t lazy

He just wouldn’t be receptive to any input whatsoever

Harsin: Lazy recruiting and lazy in glad handing.

Freeze: Lazy in coaching.

Both sorry lazy bitches and I'm glad they are gone.

If I am Cohen, any candidate I consider, I am calling people that have worked with them and been around them. I want to find out if there is any of this in them as we've been bitten twice in a row.

Are they OCD about details to the point of possibly need to consult a psychiatrist?
Do they work so much and obsess so much over football that it is alienating them from their family and could possibly lead to a divorce?

If the answer is Yes to these 2 questions, that coach is very high on my list.

Freeze did recruit. He just couldn't come up with a decent offense. He did get Durkin which is why the defense has been good so he deserves credit for that. Ultimately though it is best for everyone, including Freeze, for him to go and focus on his health and let Auburn do a rebuild on offense. I am just thankful that we don't have to do an entire team rebuild like we did after Harsin was fired.

Yes, it is so backwards, and if a coach won't agree to the simple concept that we will pay FOR PERFORMANCE then proceed to the next candidate. Hey you get a national championship, you will get a 10 million dollar bonus and a raise.SEC Champs...5 million. Playoff win, here is another million.

The buyouts are there to protect the University, as well.

I don't get why anyone would ever want to leave Auburn, if they were winning, but the buyouts keep other teams from being able to poach your coach with no repercussions

Auburn's problem has been thinking they needed them for the likes of Malzahn, Chizik, Harsin, or Hugh.

Malzahn was floated, probably by Sexton, as a candidate, for another job, and we took the damn bait, and swallowed the fricking boat.

If thats the case why are any teams successful? Every coach even successful ones is "only human".

My take too

I suspect Harsin isn't really a lazy guy in life. Perhaps the opposite. I do think he's stubborn and thought he could reinvent how you win in the SEC with his Mountain West mindset and it surprisingly didn't work

And his unwillingness to "play the game" came off as lazy, to some extent.

I mean if you won't leave campus to recruit, won't go to the airport to pick people up and won't let your coaches attend recruits games, I'd say that's pretty damn lazy. I felt like Freeze tried, but just couldn't find the answers. I felt like Harsin never even tried.

He was lazy about coaching, but a beast on the recruiting trail. Exactly the opposite of Harsin who was lazy on the trail but OK at coaching.

I heard from somebody who knows what they are talking about..........Harsin was the last coach in the building and the first to leave.

It came out after the fact...........he was watching his kid play on Friday nights instead of recruiting.

I am not sure it gets lazier than that.

Freeze was lazy at coaching, but worked his arse off on recruiting. Potato man was all about offensive meetings and scheming stuff up, but was the LAZIEST recruiter of all time.

Hell, it was reported that he wouldn't even pick up the phone to engage HS football coaches across the state. And it went both ways: He wouldn't call them and wouldn't take their calls when they reached out to him.

Freeze was never under pressure to perform. And it showed.

The problem isn't just with the coaches. It's the culture at Auburn.

*ETA - Wow, now with the golf obsession coming out instead of putting in the work, seems I was close to the mark. And no one was going to tell him that maybe it's bad optics to be 6-16 in conference yet at the course so damn much?

Soft. Very soft.
