Ultimately, I think the player performed poorly but they were not very well prepared by the offensive staff. The problems that sunk Alabama in the Rose Bowl were problems they had all season on offense.
Alabama was as bad as they had been since the aughts in offensive performance v. power conference competition. It was one thing when you have Shula probation rosters. It is another thing when you have a top 3 roster in college football by some metrics.
These players were simply poorly coached and it showed on the football field. Some of it may have been inherited problems but it is telling that only the RB coach was retained from the offensive staff. Noteworthy because RB coach is usually where you stash your best recruiter who may not be a top-end technician. Anyone who coached a very technical position on offense was gone as soon as Saban retired.

Jaeden Roberts is going to prove he belongs higher on that list. He's going to wreck some shite this year.

shite we were about 6” from securing a safety on a muffed punt that would’ve won it in regulation lol

Our defense lost the Michigan game. We were up seven with under four minutes left.

They allowed 20 points in regulation to the eventual Champs that had a month to prepare.
The defense was most certainly not to blame.
I would have taken that 20 points pregame in a heartbeat.

One might argue if we had scored more than 20 points in regulation, then we would have also won.
The last play of a game is never what causes a team to win or lose. It's the entire game that led up to that point.

I believe half or more of our sacks last year were due to simply being in the dead-arse wrong protection scheme and the other half were due to Milroe not being decisive with getting the ball out on time.
Not to mention the first half of the season where Milroe apparently believed that much like Tecmo Bowl, a QB should run straight towards their own end zone when pressured.
Bama could’ve had Anthony Munoz and Joe Thomas at tackle and we still would’ve eaten sacks when Milroe is 15 yards behind the LOS waiting 10 seconds to get the ball out.

This never changed, and if everyone is being honest he wasn't improving at the end of the year, he was regressing.
If it weren't for a miracle we should have lost to Auburn, but instead of getting the reality check the fans needed, the fans lost all perspective with one throw.
Harbaugh watched the film, realized it was a one trick pony offense- played the appropriate defense daring Milroe to throw underneath and completely shut down the offense.
We have 2 fantastic running backs this year- finally. We don't need a mobile QB at all- we need a ball distributor, and there is no way Milroe is the best QB for that.
At least under DeBear we know we will never sign another "project" QB that can't grip the basic fundamentals of the QB position.
Milroe kept claiming to be a "pocket passer," but couldn't point the pocket out on a whiteboard as he drifted beyond the pocket 90% of the time making it impossible for the tackles to protect him from those 20yd loss sacks.
I can't even get excited about DeBears offense being installed until we have a QB that can actually make it go.

Loved CNS and all he did but his ferocious, bordering on insane loyalty to upperclassmen even when a younger player was clearly better was maddening.
I hope CKD has no such illusions and plays the best player. Obviously, I don’t see what the coaches see in practice but I find it a little hard to believe Milroe can run a complicated offense. Of course, he could prove me and everyone else wrong.
My hunch is Austin Mack wins the job but the downside is almost assuredly Milroe, Simpson and maybe even Lonergan too may all transfer out. Good Lord, if that happens, we may be in some pretty doo doo with most likely a walk on as the #2 QB (Cade Carruth?).

If we had that scenario happen, I'm sure a couple of QBs would transfer in.

I think he showed progress from Tennessee to Auburn and regressed to mean against UGA and UM.

I think a mobile QB has intrinsic value regardless of RB quality, but agree completely that optimally it should be the secondary function of a QB, with 80% of their evaluation being their ability to empower the playmakers around them within the system they're running.
Its akin a PG in basketball. Their primary function is to run the offense and create shots for other people. If they can also score efficiently that’s a huge value add, but only if thats in addition to their running of the offense.

Between his footwork, field awareness, pocket presence and inability to shift protection he looked like an incredible athlete who had never been coached at QB and was basically new to the position.
Some of this falls on BOB, some of it falls on Rees, but most of it falls on Milroe and he was simply not ready to play championship level football on a consistent basis running even the adapted offense they built around him last year.

Much like with Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts, you cannot just plug Milroe into an air raid system, they just cant process it effectively.
You absolutely must choose to build an RPO, quick read offense around them that matches their skill set or find a new QB suited to your offense. Its either or. Anything else just sets everyone up for frustration and failure.
While I think Milroe will receive the best QB coaching of his life over the next few months, I simply don't believe he can run the offense I saw at UW last year.
So its either find a new QB and run the Penix offense or adapt an awkward bastardized version of the DeBoer system with Milroe running the show.

This just isn't true. There are plenty of examples of true freshman coming in and winning a starting job under Saban. This is just a case of the backup always being more popular when the starter is struggling. But in most of those cases the backup sucks worse.

There’s definitely some truth to what he said. How Dalcourt ever started over Roberts last year is beyond me.

No, it's not. Jaeden Roberts was sitting behind Dalcourt for the love of football man.
Justice looked electric and couldn't get any carries over the guys that just transferred

I think that it has been overblown outside of last season. Last season was weird with Jace and Jam not getting near enough playing time, and Roberts not starting until later in the season.

And he couldn't pick up the blitz to save his life. Not surprising, he was a true freshman and not ready yet, very few freshmen are. The off season S&C, and Spring and Fall practices, should help him tremendously.

Truth.
I personally want to see all the playmakers get involved, and the QB run the offense the way its designed. DeBear offense produced 2 1k yard receivers, and a 1k yard RB last season. Sign me up for that.
