Alabama’s Rob Vaughn on the tension in Sunday’s win over Florida:

“You just don’t poke the bear. That’s what they did.”

“They played with emotion, but they didn’t cross that line, and that’s the difference in our kids and what we saw in the other side this weekend.”

Bama interviews Shelton State's Thompson
Tommy Deas Executive Sports Editor
May 9, 2013vUpdated May 15, 2013, 2:49 p.m. CT

TUSCALOOSA | Shelton State Community College coach Madonna Thompson and Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry have interviewed for the vacant head women's basketball coaching position at the University of Alabama, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.

Thompson, 39, was a player on Alabama's 1994 Final Four team and participated in four NCAA Tournament appearances at UA. She has been head coach at Shelton State for 15 years, winning nine Alabama Community College Conference championships — including seven in the last eight years and two in a row.

Shelton State finished the regular season undefeated in 2012-13 and ended with a 33-1 record and made it to the quarterfinal round of the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.

Curry has been head coach at Texas Tech for the last seven years, leading the Lady Raiders to three straight 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament bids in 2010-11 and last season. She has compiled a 130-98 record at the school. In her previous head coaching stop, Curry led Purdue to seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances and a 179-51 record that included a trip to the national championship game in 2001.

Curry signed a five-year, $3.675 million contract in April of 2011, according to a report by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. The deal runs through the 2015-16 season and guarantees Curry $750,000 in the 2013-14 season.

Wendell Hudson was reassigned last month to an administrative position in the UA athletic department after five years as head coach.

Alabama went 68-87 under Hudson, including a 14-64 record in Southeastern Conference play.

The Crimson Tide secured its first series victory over the Gators since 2008

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Led by another outstanding start on the mound, Alabama baseball (17-7, 2-3 SEC) claimed an 8-4 win over No. 18 Florida (19-5, 3-2 SEC) at Sewell-Thomas Stadium on Saturday. As a result of Saturday's victory, the Crimson Tide earned its first series win over the Gators since 2008.

Zane Adams (4-1) gave the Tide a superlative effort in his sixth start of 2026, limiting the Gators to just two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six across 6.0 innings. Adams allowed single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings, though the southpaw tossed three consecutive scoreless innings to close his outing, making way for his side to score six of the game's final eight runs.

Out of the bullpen, Matthew Heiberger followed Adams with 2.1 effective innings of relief, allowing just one hit and two unearned runs over his seven outs. Heiberger struck out two and walked a pair in his eighth appearance of the spring. Hagan Banks, in a non-save situation, entered in the 9th, inheriting the bases loaded and one out. The Tide's de facto closer retired two of the three batters he faced to secure the win, scattering a double between two fly outs.

Alabama's leader in batting average, Brady Neal, continued his torrid pace, going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Justin Lebron was 1-for-3, clubbing a two-run home run in the 7th, adding a walk and two runs scored. Bryce Fowler ended his afternoon 1-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and three stolen bases, while Jason Torres was also 1-for-3, driving in two runs with two sacrifice bunts. Brennan Holt was a catalyst out of the nine-hole, finishing 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, two walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"Yeah, obviously a good one. Good way to finish the series or win this series I should say. When we talked to the guys, I told Zane (Adams) this when he came out of the game, I thought the story of the game was just how he competed. He had some stuff, but he didn't have just elite feel of everything. He had to battle through some things. He had to work through some things. He had to execute pitches in big spots. That's what makes him who he is. But just a really good team win. I told the team afterwards, my dad taught me this when I was a kid, and he always told me if you ever get in a fight and you get the guy on the ground, don't ever let him up. Just keep swinging, you cannot let him up. So right now, that's where we're at in this series, right? We got them on the mat, we got them on the ground, but if we let them up for one inch, we know how good that Florida team is out there. The last three Sundays, there's been no secret. We're getting no-hit through five or six innings last week at Kentucky. Didn't do a good job three Sundays ago against Houston. This is going to be a good test for us. It's been a great start to the weekend, but you don't get in this position very often against really good teams, and we're in a position to finish the series. So, can we come out tomorrow and be mature enough to keep them on the ground? I trust that Myles (Upchurch) is going to have a great start."

First time since 1942. Last time Gators had no hits - 1963 (per Rick Pendley)

The Crimson Tide right-hander produced the ninth no-hitter in Alabama baseball history on Friday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Tyler Fay recorded the ninth no-hitter in Alabama program history on Friday night, as the Crimson Tide (16-7, 1-3 SEC) opened its three-game series against No. 18 Florida (19-4, 3-1 SEC) with a 6-0 win over the Gators at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Fay becomes the first Tide pitcher since Eddie Owcar in 1942 to manage an individual 9.0-inning no-hitter and marks Alabama's first no-hitter of any kind since 2014.

Fay (4-2) was nothing short of brilliant in his sixth start of the season, creating new career highs in innings pitched (9.0) and strikeouts (13). The redshirt junior's only blemishes came in the form of two walks, retiring 27 of the 29 batters he faced. Fay struck out at least one batter in seven of his nine innings on the mound, including at least two punchouts in five of nine innings. Over his last three innings, Fay struck out six of the final nine batters he faced.

Offensively, the Tide relied on a variety of contributors, including Bryce Fowler, who finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Justin Osterhouse was 2-for-3, adding a double and an RBI to go with a run scored. Brady Neal also closed 2-for-3 while driving in a run with two walks. Luke Vaughn led all Alabama players with two RBI, finishing 1-for-3. Brennan Holt contributed one run batted in and a run scored as part of a 1-for-4 night, while Will Plattner notched a double and two runs scored to encompass his 1-for-3 line.

From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
"Man, what a, just a special night for Tyler (Fay) and his family, just incredible. It came on the heels at a time where I'll just call what it is, we really needed it. Just a masterful effort, just completely smothered the strike zone, mixed pitches. The offense did a great job finally playing the brand we've been looking for. Tyler Fay, obviously the story tonight. I mean, it's why you come back. He had a chance to go sign and move into pro ball, but you come back for nights like tonight because you don't get these memories. Like, throw everything else out the window, the money he's going to make this year, all that, throw all that out. These memories are what makes college baseball so special. Super proud of him, proud of our boys, and now the hard thing, and not to diminish it, but that's one game, right? And we got to come back tomorrow, and it took a lot of energy out of us, we got to come back tomorrow and replicate that against a dang good team."
