Pretty much this.
On the one hand, we are all alive to watch the GOAT, on the other, he's coaching at an already historic program and he just won't fricking retire.

Eventually recruits have to start questioning whether he will be there for four more years, right?

Ok I was wrong about who raised the funds. Emmert and Saban's vision made it possible for LSU to compete at a very high level. Miss Terry went on the interview and told Saban what needed to happen in order to win there. So I'll retract my statement, Emmert and Saban came to LSU at the perfect time.

Saban plans for everything. He probably has a plan to upload his coaching consciousness into a computer, that will be mounted on a mobile automaton, that will continue to win at Alabama.

Opportunity helps a lot too. In a lot of cases the stars need to align for your ability to be recognized or to reach ultimate greatness.
Sometime in the last 50 years there’s been a Patton or Eisenhower or Grant or Washington or Napoleon who was born, but he didn’t have a pivotal war to engrave his name in history. He will not be remembered even though the talent was there. It’s like the alternative ending to T2 where John Connor is a senator instead of the savior of mankind because the war with the machines didn’t happen.
You have to have opportunity.

Yeah but with advancement in medicine, wasn’t 55 the retirement age then because most died before 60?
OMG… yep…1982… that was during the Great Depression just before WWII started in 1985. At that time they hadn’t cured yellow fever in the South and in the 1980s it was the cause of lots of deaths of slaves on the plantations.
Of course the development of the automobile a few years later meant the doctor could make home visits quicker so reduced mortality. Also the increasing use of dial telephones helped alert those doctors on the need for homevisits.
Of course in football they outlawed the “flying wedge” after Coach Bryant died because he had so much success with it. Also in the 1990s they introduced the 2-point conversion and the over-time period to eliminate tied games because Bryant had 126 ties during his coaching career.
Good god … some of you puppies are breathtakingly illiterate, uneducated, or just plain stupid, at least about history. You take your pick. If you pick #1 or #2, do something about it.

Good God, man, Did Miss Terry tell you that she told her husband what he needed at LSU to win? Interesting that he referred to her as Terry when they were in Baton Rouge…She became Miss Terry for you Bammers. Just sayin…

In fairness, the Bear was born in 1913 and his life expectancy was about 50. The date of birth is more relevant than the date of death in a conversation like this. Science improved significantly from 1913 to 1983. He outlived his life expectancy because of the improvements to science but he clearly passed earlier than the life expectancy of Baby Boomers.
