re: Safest place to stay near Baton Rouge?

Only sort of relevant, but I just learned yesterday that Karmelo Anthony, the kid that stabbed to death Austin Metcalf, in Frisco Texas, is from Baton Rouge.

Former Alabama quarterback shares story of time Nick Saban sent Jeremy Pruitt to guard house from Lane Kiffin

football scoop dot com

Back in 2008, before developing into a multiple time All-SEC and All-American at Alabama where he would help the Tide capture three national titles while taking home a number of additional awards, AJ McCarron was a standout at St. Paul's Episcopal School (Mobile, AL) being recruited by some of the top programs in the country.

His recruiting process is littered with a number of good stories that stay under wraps, but on his podcast Dynasty, McCarron recalled a story in high school where Nick Saban, Lane Kiffin and Jeremy Pruitt all intersected.

Leading up to the 2009 season, Kiffin was entering his first season as the head coach at Tennessee, and Saban was early on in his build of what would become one of the most impressive college football dynasties of all time in Tuscaloosa, while Pruitt was working on the Tide's staff in a support staff role.

Saban had tasked Pruitt to stake out McCarron's home to make sure that the Vols weren't creeping in on their homegrown prospect.

As you picture Pruitt staked out like a cop in a suburban neighborhood keeping watch on a house, it's worth noting that he was there for two days following strict orders from Saban making sure no one in orange was approaching the house.

McCarron shares that one day he was sleeping and he woke up to banging on his bedroom window, and he opens the blinds only to see Kiffin and the entire Vols offensive staff.

After letting them in and holding court for a while, McCarron got a call from Saban about an hour or so after Kiffin and the staff left his home just to check in. McCarron would go on to share with Saban that the Vols staff had just left the house, which angered Saban - who thought he had the place staked out with a trusted assistant.

As McCarron shares, Saban immediately called Pruitt who insisted that no one had been in or out of the house all day, and just to be sure Pruitt went to the door to check in. A little old lady answered only to share that he was at the wrong house the entire time.

Turns out, Pruitt was about six houses down from the McCarron residence and that led to what we can only imagine was a legendary butt-chewing from Saban.

Former Tide running back Trent Richardson would go on to share Pruitt was directed to do the same outside his house, and I'm betting he double, triple, and quadruple-checked the address when Saban had him do that one.

"Year 3 is a level of accountability in every program that I've taken over, that is heightened," Kelly told CBS Sports at the SEC Media Days on Monday. "There's a trust factor and an accountability level within our process that pops, if you will, and that's this year."

"This will be the deepest team that we've had," he said. "I don't know what that's going to be relative to the expectations. … I can tell you in Year 3, I've had really good success with getting our football team to be the most accountable, trusting team that I've had here at LSU.

"That's usually been pretty good at my other stops."

This offseason, LSU Head Coach Brian Kelly talked glowingly about the results he's had in his third year at programs noting that he has gone a combined 33-5 in his third seasons at Notre Dame, Cincinatti, and Central Michigan. He told the fans multiple times to judge him by his results in year three and that's starting to seem like a massive mistake.

The Tigers are now 6-4 and 3-3 in the SEC in Kelly's third year at LSU after losing to a Florida team that the entire fanbase wanted the coach fired. Kelly has lost to two teams fighting to even finish .500 in USC and Florida, got blown out in the second half against Texas A&M, and got dominated by Alabama.

I don't remember the exact numbers but Ole Miss and LSU have vacated/forfeited the most wins of any program.

That may be so, but I am pretty sure that poster is being facetious, implying Les Miles was a poor coach, yet they will boast about his national title.

I searched google. 21 of Alabama's win were vacated because of the books. 8 more wins were forfeited because of the Langham napkin, so 29 total, not 31, plus one tie game.
Alabama won 31 more games, on the field, that some suit in an ncaa office decided they should forfeit because Antonio Langham signed a napkin for a street agent in the aftermath of the national title vs Miami.

edit to note that some of those 31 games may be for the fact that players didn't turn books back in during the Shula era. I would have to review that.

And now we have straight up pay for play for millions of dollars.

You mean the winningest active coach in the NCAA.

Only because he's an old man, and this source indicates that the great Kirk Ferentz: 204 Wins has won the most. Mike Gundy, Bronco Mendenhall, Troy Calhouns, and Bret Bilema are also in this stellar top 10.

wow. It's kind of sad that Alabama's football team has that much impact on your well being, but kind of cool too.
It was reported Wednesday that President Trump is to create a commission that will examine college sports and its inherent issues such as NIL, the transfer portal, conference alignment, and Title IX.

Sources told the Athletic on Wednesday night that Saban is expected to be named co-chair; no additional information on other potential co-chairs or commission members has been released at this time.

My point is that it looks foolish to blast Kelly for his performance and then make excuses for DeBoer's.

We can objectively measure head to head, Kelly in his 3rd yr (he said judge me by my 3rd yr) and DeBoer's first year, with Jalen Fn Milroe at qb

Alabama 42 LSU 13
Nussmeir 1 td and 2 interceptions. That kid is a turnover machine.

still the most talented roster in the country, per the 247 Team Talent Composite.

if Alabama still has the most talented roster (I doubt it), it's because DeBoer has recrutited the 2nd and 3rd ranked classes since he's been here, because judging by the 2025 draft, Saban's last few classes must have been over rated. In fact, that's another thing. We've heard for years about an "Alabama bump" but now you claim that UA has the best roster, though pre season last yr you agreed with the Rant posters that said Alabama's roster had been decimated by the transfer portal after Saban retired.
quote:

You created multiple threads in BK's second year at LSU suggesting he was a bad coach and would be fired.

I don't know if I said bad but may have.

The fact is he's a consistent 8-4/9-3 coach, and if he doesn't improve, will nearly certainly be fired eventually. The problem is that in this ever increasing pay for play college football world, most programs, and certainly including LSU, don't have the discretionary funds just to buy out huge contracts (hi to LSU AD Woodward), spend multi millions on a new staff, and pay players the going rate too. Example: Underwood. So enjoy.

edit: You talking to another poster, but I have said the entire time, as well, that Kelly is average at best

The most talented roster in the country?

This time last year Rant posters said Alabama's roster was decimated by the transfer portal after Saban retired.

That aside, in the NFL draft, Alabama players went
#12
#31
#92 (late 3rd rd)
and a few others in late rounds

Worst NFL draft for Alabama in a very long time. But we were loaded !!
I don't know about all this but I do know the LSU coach took the 2020 Alabama game very seriously

I'd say Michigan last year. Ohio State brazenly admitted how much they paid for their team.
