How in the world did it take Saban until his 50s to start winning titles?

Coaches used to have to make a name for themselves before landing a big time spot like that. It was much different than today, That's for sure.

Saban is the GOAT. I don't think I have ever seen a Team play so horrible in their rivalry week and then turn around the very next week a blow out the number 1 team in the nation. It's like when Bama needs to be good, they're good. Nobody is better than Saban in post season preparation. It's next level stuff

Bear Bryant didn't take of himself very well. Saban never smoked and doesn't even drink anymore. And I promise you Bryant didn't play basketball to stay healthy.

It's not so much when they were born. Go look at the life expectancy of a Russian male today. 66 years. They don't take care of themselves over there either.

As for Saban's late success he said they started winning when they stopped focusing on the results and started working on the process. It's the little things every day that add up to a win. Just bust your arse every minute of every day and you'll be the best you can be.

5 years..zero back to back 10 win seasons.

First 5 years at Bama?

7-6
12-2
14-0 NC
10-3
12-1 NC

Hmm..

What did his 5 years at LSU look like? I guess winning consistently is just easier at Alabama

Which goes back to my original statement. The Miami failure taught him a lesson after LSU tenure showed him the process.

Bama's resources (including $$ and boosters being "all in") gets you this run.

Bum Phillips said that about another coach.
No, Eddie Robinson said that about Bear Bryant

It was Frank Howard about Coach Bryant originally. Other coaches have said it about others since.

I'll say it again - that Nick Saban could have all his success, then just modify that formula because it wasn't working, is the strangest thing I've ever seen in football. Nobody does that in his position - until him.

This is it. I mean, how many people mocked him for hiring Lane because they thought it was a gimmick or doomed to fail? What was really happening was Nick recognized the need for change and was proactive about it. Amazing for a guy his age and with his success.

dwight,
Coach Bryant, like all of us, was flawed, but he was not “trash.” Trashy describes your post.
