The Pruitt rumors are floating out there. I tend to think this is more true than not. I'd be surprised if Pruitt isn't the DC in a year.

Steele did shepherd Smart in 2007 before stepping aside in 2008 with Smart becoming DC. Saban has been trying to recreate that magic.

Pete Golding's early years mirror Smart a lot, he just kinda plateaued at Bama. Unfortunately his "veteran presence" at Co-DC was a glorified bagman in Lupoi.

He was a good DC, he couldn't really push beyond that when it was needed...

I do like seeing Saban talk about "fundamentals" and "execution" when referring to Steele in the past.

Like he's bringing in a hitting coach to help fix the swing that was once there.

Because he has 9 years in Alabama’s state retirement system, and with 10 years he will be fully vested.

Its a theory, not spoken of as a fact. Just something to keep in mind. *Keep in mind Saint had the same theory*

I think Steele only needs 1 to 2 years to hit the 10 year mark in the state of alabama

The state of Alabama is his home.

We've got to get better up front. It's not a coincidence that our best defenses featured guys like Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, and Dalvin Tomlinson. Tomlinson was an afterthought on those DL groups and I'd kill to have a guy like him now.

He got fired with Pruitt. His star anywhere outside of Knoxville faded a long time ago.

I honestly think this hire could end up being a one year deal with Pruitt being hired back once we learn the terms of his punishment.

I think this is possible, as well. You have to think Steele is getting close to retirement. Bringing him in allows him to finish at Alabama and for Alabama it means we get someone who knows the system and how things work under Saban. Then, once Pruitt is cleared whenever that happens, Steele could retire or be something like Associate Head Coach and a position coach, with Pruitt as DC.

Maybe that’s all wishful thinking, but it at least seems plausible.

Scott Payton alluded to "conditions" that Saban has put on both coordinator positions that impacted who took these jobs. Could a condition be that Pruitt takes the job later? We don't know yet.

Agree 100%. This hire isn’t about reinventing the wheel, just getting it back to the right psi.
Plus nice to have this energy back from a DC twitter link… LINK

Remember Steele's Auburn teams - let Brown/Davidson work up front, linebackers played with their hair on fire and back end played lots of aggressive zone.

Only problem is Auburn didn't run the same defense Saban does. Auburn allowed their DL in a 4-3 to consistently rush up field. Ours are mostly asked to hold gaps and blockers while our middle linebackers fill from 5-7 yards deep. Either that or we have Will and Dallas drop into coverage instead of being in the defensive backfield.
If we got the same defense that Steele used at Auburn, I'd be fine with it.
