North Carolina State Senior Owen Lloyd posted the fastest time in the men's 1650 yard Freestyle, earning him the ACC Title, an automatic entry to the National Championships, and a new best time. Moments later, an announcement was made that Lloyd had been disqualified for "interference with another swimmer"...
quote:

The rule(s) at play from the NCAA rulebook:
- Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1a: "Any competitor who interferes with another swimmer during a race shall be disqualified from that race, subject to the discretion of the referee..."
- Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1b: "A swimmer who changes lanes during a heat shall be disqualified."

I'm glad this well-written article clearly explained exactly what this swimmer did in order to get disqualified.

The local TV stations do this: write the article as vaguely as possible to force people to watch a video.

I think it’s messed up. The lane he entered was his own teammate’s and he was already finished

It's a well known rule in swimming that you can't leave your lane until everyone has finished the race. It's a shame that he got caught up in the moment.

He could have easily ducked under the ropes. He intentionally created a visual anomaly to attract attention to himself. People need to start obeying rules and respecting the sport (again) instead of using it for shameless self-promotion. Screw the coddling announcers. No one is bigger than the sport. Call me old-fashioned.

What's your opinion on Lea Thompson attracting attention to herself?

Ok boomer.

I swam competitively and what he did would have in no way impacted me.

Once again, we have posters saying someone should be able to break the rules without any penalties. These rules are known by the swimmers, and everyone should follow them.

Well when you’re picking and choosing which people to discipline for breaking said rules, the rules themselves don’t mean shite anymore. You’re gonna punish a kid for celebrating but glorify a man for competing against women ? GTFO.

Trash ruling; absolute trash! We have men swimming against women and this is a DQ? GTFO!

But men get to claim titles in women's sports. They're enforcing the wrong rules.

The judges must be named and they must be interviewed...either they change the stupidity of their interpretation of the rules, or they step down and leave the United States ....

He knew the rule on that, all he had to do was wait a few seconds for people to finish. Hard to muster much sympathy in that situation.

Apparently the rule is so well known that the commentators had no idea till told why.. Dude was legit the fastest in the field. Celebrates 1, 2 finish with teammate. let the race stand and see if another team files a protest

Sounds like there is some discretion of the referees on these rules. This is idiotic. It didn't go against the spirit and purpose of the rule. We know the rule is for interfering with another swimmer. There was no interference with another swimmer.

Absolute BS ruling

That is not at all the spirit of the rule, he did not interfere with any other swimmer, which is the intent of the rule
